I'm ordering. I'd like black, but I'm not sure I like the price increase. $200 for 20GB more and black color? Weird.

"Glossy" screen sounds kinda sketchy, though. Is that like those XBrites on the Vaios?

Rrrrr.. Unless my campus store has 'em today, I'm gonna have to wait 2 whole days to order one or buy in person.. I guess that'll give me time to swing buy the new Ardmore Apple Store and check out this glossy action.

The black one is $200 Cnd more and it just has a slightly larger hard drive? Maybe that will make my colour choice for me.

Apple claims the MB has 6h battery life. They then further specify 3.5h with wireless turned off and 2.5h for DVD playback. Not that bad if it's true.

Shipping times are looking good. I'm wondering how long they'll be able to keep that promise of 1-5 business days.

I'm actually wondering if Apple is going to lose many MBP sales due to the good specs of this MB. The only drawback seems to be the GMA950 and the smaller resolution. Other than that, these guys are looking very good! And at $1299 the 2.0GHz MB is a bargain.

Yeah, that worries me. I don't like glossy screens much. Oh well, I'll be optimistic cuz I don't want the 15".

Don't forget Combo -> SuperDrive upgrade. They shoulda stuck a little more RAM in there too. Or at least made it one 512 MB stick on the higher end instead of two 256es. I mean, who's gonna get the better model and not buy at least an extra Gig of RAM?

Edit: Spoke too soon: I didn't notice that middle option. That is really really weird, that the color and HD are the only diffs. I gotta go see what the edu pricing is like now..

http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Im...son_chart.html

There are larger custom HDs on the black model. Look at the comparison chart.

Edited: Sorry, I misread the chart. There's just no small option.

However, the statement further above that you need to buy black to get the superdrive is incorrect.

Yeah, the $1299 white model has the SD already. The only real upgrade going from $1299 to $1499 is the 20GB HD capacity increase and the black color. Apple's really pushing it. Bastards. LOL.

The MBPs were upgraded. That just had to be done with the MBs offering 2.0GHz at $1299.

Yeah, I realized that. That's why I edited it to mention that I didn't notice the middle white model w/60GB HD and SuperDrive. The price premium for the black is really kinda insane, consider that, at least through the edu store, it only cost $45 to switch the HD from 60GB to 80 on the white SuperDrive model.

The question now is: am I stupid enough to pay $155 for a black case?

I am very happy with Apple. They have not crippled the MB in fear of MBP sales, which i am VERY happy about. the processor options are fantastic - couldn't have asked for more. Only gripe, same as everyones, integrated graphics, but ill get over it!

THings i love:

latchless desgin
FAST
magsafe
FR
isight
THIN!!
not to pricey
Screen
audio in (and digital!)
5400 HDs
DVI
Spannig

list goes on im sure...

Oh come on. For this price range, these are very decent specs and you can't exactly blame Apple for not wanting to completely undercut MacBook Pro sales. Even as they are, the MacBooks are a lot better value in comparison to the MacBook Pros than the iBooks were in comparison to the PowerBooks.

There really would be barely anything differing the MB from the MBP if the MB has a graphics card..

Did anyone notice BTW, that you can choose to 'upgrade' the MBP's screen to the glossy finish? Hmm, I think I need to see that in person before I can judge... Maybe they also upgraded/switched the screens on the MBP due to the complaints?

I might be stupid enough. I'm working that out now. The problem is I really don't need the superdrive. I should just buy the base config and then flip it in a year and buy a new model. But if I buy the middle config, then it's only a minorly obscene amount of money to get the black one. But then I can't justify flipping it in a year as easily.

Sigh. Anyway, the Canada corporate/educational store isn't back up yet so I can't order anyway yet.

Good catch on the MBP upgrade, too. Any other changes besides the CPU speed?

I gotta agree with the things you like. And like I was saying in the Gigantor Thread of Doom, I can live with the integrated graphics. But besides the asinine style premium for the black version, I just noticed one more thing not to like: there's no way to get one with a free RAM slot. Any custom configs fill both slots, so if you want to get more RAM from someplace else, you wind up with a spare SO-DIMM to deal with..

Anyway, I'm off to see if by some miracle they got these in at the campus computer shop before I gotta be at class..

Edit: by "you" I meant jamie, whose list of likes was the last post when I started typing

I'm very anxious to see this 'glossy' screen in person. I hope it's not as bad as I thought it was when I recently checked out a Vaio.

Another good catch on the MBP screen. From the site:

MacBook Pro offers an antiglare coated widescreen display that’s perfect for color-minded professionals. For a more immersive viewing experience, you can configure MacBook Pro with a glossy finish. This gives everything you see a richer, more saturated feel.

Veryyyy tempting...great release here.

This is the best release in probably the last few years in terms of lack of things to complain about.

I can safely say these MacBooks exceeded my expectations by a wide margin!

Did anybody else notice how much going from 1GB to 2GB costs? It's insane.

Especially because you can't have 1GB in a single DIMM version. So basically most will buy RAM cheaper some place else and throw away a perfectly new 512MB stick.

Look at the wireless page and see the top-down pic of the new MB. Notice that the keyboard layout is a bit different. No more latches to flip up the keyboard. The trackpad also looks substantially wider. The speakers are different, too.

I don't mind the Intel GMA 950 as it's all I'll need (since I am not a gamer), but I am wondering why Apple is deliberately limiting its memory to only 64MB? On every other notebook out there (and on Intel Specs) the GMA 950 it's always 128MB. Why would they cut the memory allocation in half when it's just shared anyway? Perhaps it's becasue they are shipping them with 512MB and the allocated amount will go up to 128MB if the user upgrades to 1GB of memory.

Yeah, I just tried to make that last point a few posts earlier (but can't blame you for missing it because it was probably in my ridiculously verbose style as usual).

I'll probably just buy the base config and get 1.5 or 2 Gigs somewhere else (1.25 just seems so goofy, eh?). Of course, then I'm stuck with 2 unused perfectly new DIMMs. I s'pose craigslist is good for something besides reading the personals, though..

Yeah, it's stupid. But I guess with these specs in this price range, something like this RAM thing has to be expected.

Don't assume, check the tech specs pages before spending your money.

Oh, never mind, I did it for you. They both say PC2-5300 DDR2 SO-DIMMs, so you're probably good to go.

In other news, I'm still here because I called my campus store, whom Apple doesn't give a crap about, and they have no idea when they'll have 'em in stock. So I gotta drive out to a real Apple Store after work if I wanna fondle, er, try one out..

The crazy RAM prices don't surprise me; Apple has always had inflated RAM prices. I've always just ordered the minimum and bought upgrades from coastmemory.com

Plus, if you have patience, you can sell the OEM Apple RAM on eBay to make some of it back.
