This is apparently a tone that can usually only be heard by people under the age of 25.

Can you hear it? Yes, no, and post your age (or, if you don't want anyone to know, just post what range you're in - 30s, 40s, etc.). I'm interested to know how accurate their claim actually is.

Yes, but shouldn't we do it every year to make sure our hearing isn't becoming worse?

Unbelievably, it has the same title. Though can't believe it was from over 2 years ago.
Can you hear this?

Also, original account sighting. Wow, that is old.

It was so awesome at the time, it got duped.

OW!

(over 25 here, as well - but I've been pretty religiously wearing hearing protection during loud events for the past fifteen years.)

Heard it, over 25 but not more than 35. Ouch. I maxed out the volume thinking it was too low then quickly found out that the file just needed to finish loading.

I generally have good hearing range but don't do so well hearing conversation in white noise or echo environments.

Also, wtf is this:

There's aliasing IN THE FILE, meaning that if you turn it up loud enough, even an average 70-year-old might still hear *something*!

Yeah, it's at -70 dB, but you'd think that even for pastime science-tainment, they'd make at least a slight pass at accuracy...!

Maybe that should be someone's MySpace music that auto-loads on their page. It should certainly drive away an undesired demographic.

Not a peep. Going on near 40. But my 4 y.o. tells me it's there. Played too much way too loud heavy metal in small closed spaces as a teenager/twenty-something and industrial noise after that.

29 and I hear it.

My friend has a weird reaction to it, it makes his eyes water and his nose itch. Even if he couldn't hear it, he could feel it.

I'm over 25, and I heard a very high-pitched and irritating sound.

Please don't do that again.

Ouch - yes - and well over 25. I guess those years in a loud, cramped practice space didn't completely kill my hearing after all...

Make sure your speakers have the frequency range to play the sound. On my laptop I couldn't hear a thing. When I plugged in my Sennheiser headphones I could hear it with no problem.

That was an annoying high pitch sound.

I'm over 25. In my early 30's.

Can't hear it, but I can feel it. I'm 35 and have hearing loss from too much rock and roll and half-stacks.

yes; over 30.

not only can i hear it; that is what i "hear" (more like feel) from a lot of things; even when i'm not in the room. i can walk into a place i never have been before and know if for example, there is a tube tv on in another room; or there are flourescent light on in their basement, etc. i can walk into most office buildings and "hear" that all over. i keep my lights off in my office and switched to LCDs years ago. if i don't, i go nuts.

Initially couldn't hear anything... until I turned up the volume. Doh!

But yeah, I can most definitely hear it, and I'm more than 25 (and less than 50).

P.S. The sound is quite annoying. It also sounds like the whine that some old CRTs have when they're on (and muted).

EDIT:

Evil beat me to it.

EDIT AGAIN:

I wonder how much of the I-can't-hear-it crowd is due to aging ears, and how much of it is due to crappy computer speakers.

I think most speakers would pick that up, no matter how crappy they are.

I think a better question would be: "How much of it is due to ageing ears, and how much is due to the noise being masked by other household noises at the same frequency that perhaps also the listener has gotten used to and subconsciously blocked out?".

Good point.

Oh and I hear it better in one ear than the other. Not surprising, as that result agrees with a hearing test I had done years ago. (I was a volunteer patient for a student audiologist.)

Nope. I'm 52, but my 11 year old and 22 year old children wanted to kill me the third time I tried to hear it. "What is that sound...SHUT it off..."

I'm definitely bookmarking that site. Anytime my kids refuse to do their homework, chores, etc...., well you get the picture.

Yes, and I am exactly 25.

I've done other online hearing test sorts of things and learned that my hearing depreciates pretty rapidly above 15 kHz, though. My limit is maybe 16.5.

Yes, from laptop speakers at 28.

Surprising, too, because I've done a lot of jackhammer work without the best (or sometimes any) ear protection.

Yeah, I could hear it, and I'm 26. I took a hearing test last year, I can apparently hear up to 19kHz, give or take. My 27 year old better half couldn't hear anything above 13kHz.

It also got my cats' attention fairly quickly.

Also to note that depending on just how crappy the D/A stage is that's doing the conversion, you're gonna be hearing some nice aliasing at 7.5 kHz.

No doubt there's some 7.5 K in there, but I didn't hear any.

I tried this later last night through the MBP speakers. In the lounge. The cats launched themselves at the MBP with a fury I've rarely seen.

Yes, and I'm 120.

will produce a tone that is generally only heard by people under the age of 25. It has been used as a deterrent device to keep teenagers from loitering in malls and shops,
That mall or shop will never get a dime from me.

Unless, if there's really nobody under 25, I might go in there with hearing protection...
