What are your must have, showcase Blu-Ray discs? Did you upgrade a flick from DVD for any reasons besides video resolution? Any movies whose HD visuals have any "wow" factor for you?

I'm just trying to get a feel for what would make a worthwhile purchase (or re-purchase) beyond HD. Though I seem to understand that some films have been given special care in their transfer and may look better than others. Or that may have been fandom talking.

Wall-e may be the first BR disc we get, but I also really want to get a live action movie that's done well to see if it's worth it for more than my favorite movies.

IronMan on Blu-Ray looks really nice.
Cars and Ratatouille are two other animations which look amazing. I will be buying Wall-E when it comes out.

I have only watched this series on DVD, but if and when i do get a BluRay player, my first purchase will probably be the Planet Earth series (if its available).

Wow. After that Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD epic I thought lots of people would have opinions. I guess not. So thank you for your suggestions.

I've seen Batman Begins on a couple other best Blu-ray lists. Kinda wish I liked it.

I do like Superman Returns, though. Edward Scissorhands sounds like a great choice given the season. Especially since I don't think we have it already.

I love Blade Runner, but I never watch it or have a desire to. Watching that film's an emotional investment I'm just not willing to make.

The Planet Earth series is on Blu-ray. Saw it for $66.00 at Sam's Club the other day.

Any of the Pixar movies should look amazing. Being as they are most likely digital to digital representations.

If you are looking to show off audio quality in a 5.1 or 7.1 system:

So, we picked up a few;

Edward Scissorhands
Bram Stoker's Dracula
The Polar Express (sosumi)

We're waiting 'til closer to Christmas to watch Polar Express, but did watch Edward Scissorhands. With nothing to compare it to, it looked great. I thought I'd be blow away, but "looked great" is all I can muster at this point. Mostly because of the amount of bright colors in the movie. Upscaled DVDs tend to look washed out with low contrast, but on Blu-ray this movie... looked great.

Dracula on the other hand is a different story. We do have the Superbit DVD of it and when we decided to get a dedicated player (after our Mac mini's drive started to crap out (which also isn't booting right now and won't accept the system disc... ****!)) the first flick that popped into the little woman's head was this one. It was also on a "best Blu-ray" list somewhere so we went for it. We do a quick compare and I gotta say I'm not at all impressed. Any gains made in sharpness and saturation are completely lost to too much contrast (serious black poolage) and over-saturation. Plus it looks like a lot of anti-aliasing went on in the transfer. Definitely not a showcase title.

So a mixed bag so far, but I must say I am really looking forward to a full rez transfer of WALL-E. Maybe we'll rent Cars in the meantime...

No, I'm very serious. Best damn TV show ever and a great movie to boot.
