I am really in need of some advice, I'm trying to decide on a hard drive for backup something around 250GB and I can't decide on which one to go with.
these are my choices so far
250GB OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro 7200RPM FireWire 800/400+USB2 Combo Solution w/8MB Data Buffer
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other.../MAU8F7250GB8/

I was thinking about the LaCie 250GB - d2 Hard Drive Extreme with Triple Interface
but I have heard conflicting things about the drives and there reliability

Also: G-DRIVE FW (FW 800 & FW 400)
http://www.g-technology.com/Products/G-DRIVE.cfm

Any advice on which one to go with or other products that might be better will be appreciated.

I have no experience with those drives, but do like that G-Drive case style. Just make sure you buy from a company that offers a money-back guarantee.

Recently, I purchased an Acomdata 250GB USB/Firewire drive. It's one of their new E5 designs with the pushbutton backup. It even comes with a lite version of Retrospect backup software. Pretty cool, I thought.

That is, until I discovered that Firewire boot isn't possible because of the button backup.

So, I e-mailed Acomdata and told them about the situation. They apologized for marketing the drive as being bootable, and even offered to exchange it for a brand new E5 without the pushbutton backup.

I've decided to keep the drive anyway, since I bought it just for backup purposes.

Acomdata seems to be a company that cares about their customers. I'd check out their products at acomdata.com. The E5's are very nice.

Be careful with enclosures as sometimes the chipsets
cannot handle large drives. I picked up a 300GB
internal drive in a killer deal at outpost.com but
it didn't work in my enclosure. The enclosure
could handle 200GB drives but not 300GB.
Nowhere did it say what the upper limit was.

I have quite a few external hard drives -- some
I put together and some I bought complete.
I'm happy with my Western Digital complete drives.

If you buy a combined drive/enclosure, it may
cost a little more but you know it will work.

I've got the G-Drive FW800, and it's very nice.

Plus points:
  • No fan
  • On/Off switch (you'd be surprised at how many don't have this!)
  • Fast!!
  • Looks great
Minus points:
  • Drive start up sounds like a James Bond sound effect! (But it's actually quite neat, and only lasts a few seconds)
