Just got back to work after a few weeks off due to being involved in a car crash. Before I got back I had a phonecall saying my computer wouldn't start up, just the power button lighting up when it was pressed.

I got in, and it was as they said, power button only lights up when pressed, nothing else happens. After a quick google search on my phone, I opened it up, held down the mobo reset button inside for about 30 seconds, and hey presto its booted up again. Stayed fine all day.

My questions - is it dying, what of, and how long has it got until its a gonner?

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Dying? Doubtful. But your motherboard battery is probably a gonner.

Note: don't go past 10 seconds when pushing the CUDA reset button.

You may need a new PRAM battery. Most electronic stores have them, there is also this UK Apple spare parts provider which has them in stock. Good luck

Since your machine is up and running again, it's hard to tell whether there is something seriously wrong with it. The PRAM battery seems like a possible culprit, but this is mere speculation.

I'd just argue the other way around: from a business perspective, this machine is what, six, seven years old now? Even if you squeeze another year of life out of it, you should make plans to replace it one way or the other.

Replacement is the plan, this machine won't run CS4, I tried CS3 and it wasn't good. I've been 'next in line' for a new mac since Christmas! In a way its the worst kind of crap as a computer, until this happened its been reliable, just dog slow. Most of the other Macs here are iMacs and a few have had a common overheating problem, all the same fault. Mine just keeps on chugging along...

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Seconded.
A 20" iMac isn't that expensive and it'll run circles around your current MDD G4. You can continue to use your display and use monitor spanning.

Been backing up since i got back, the screen won't be any good as its an ADC Cinema Display, not DVI or VGA.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

It's good that you have backups, but I second angelmb. You probably have a dead PRAM battery.

Well things are looking up, a Mac Pro has been ordered, along with CS4, and I'm happy.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Do you know what the plans are for the MDD? I might be interested in some of the parts depending on the specs and prices.
AT&T iPhone 5S and 6; 13" MBP; MDD G4.
