I see the Apple Store sells a QuickTime codec for MPEG2 decoding. How about encoding? Is there a QT codec for this? Is there another way?

DVDStudio Pro comes with a QuickTime encoder. iDVD obviously includes an encoder, but it is a constant bitrate with only two settings (60 min/disc and 90). You can dig around in your .dvdproj or whatever iDVD projects are called to find the mpeg2 files. Free encoders are generally based on the open-source mpeg2enc engine, and also perhaps ffmpeg, I'm not sure. Both have mediocre quality and downright bad speed compared with the Apple codecs. but they're free. Well-known (as in I can think of them right now despite having never tried to encode an MPEG2) GUIs for these free projects include ffmpegX, MediaPipe and MEncoderX

I have the mpeg2 QT component and it lets me export mpeg2. Still I prefer ffmpegx. It's quicker and free.
