I use and Epson Stylus C82. Before Tiger (OS X 10.4),
I used the Epson print drivers and the color match
was fantastic. After Tiger, printing is just not the
same. It appears that printing goes through some
gimp thing. It takes forever and the color match sucks
(dark and muddy).

How to I get back to good quality prints with my
Epson inkjet printer?

Did you download and install the latest drivers?

I've been trying to solve this problem for weeks.
I found the solution about 15 minutes after posting
the question.

The solution is to completely avoid the terrible
gimp drivers (but the way to do this is not
intuitively obvious).

When using the Printer Setup Utility to add the
printer, do not accept the default driver (which
looks like it would be correct). Instead, click
on "More Printers..." A new window will
appear with a popup menu. If you have
the Epson drivers installed, you should
find a few Epson printer options in that
popup menu. Select the one that is
correct for you (e.g. Epson TCP/IP or
Epson USB).

This driver works radically faster and
better than the Apple-supplied gimp drivers.

The other driver is also supplied (as in included) by Apple.

That is correct. Do not make the mistake that I made by
installing the latest driver found on the Epson web site.
That screwed up everything. It worked for a while
but became totally flakey. I ended up doing a whole
system reinstall (my first time ever for OS X).

The latest Epson drivers are in the OS X installation.
Use those.

Do not use the gimp drivers. They are super slow
and terrible quality.

Man, those driver hassles are a bummer.

As I just posted in another periph thread, I like the sound of the new Epson R340 Photo/Mac printer... but would LOVE to hear from someone that had actually used the R340 on Tiger.
