Actually, if it affects every Windows OS released since 1990 and doesn't require user interaction to compromise a computer, that's pretty damn huge.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

yea, but it still won't convince people to ditch Windows for something that actually works properly. What is needed is a virus that causes a wintel box to deliver painful electric shocks to the user's genitalia every 5 minutes.

I'm not sure MS deserves all the blame. These hackers aren't making things better.

To counter argue, they are forcing MS to tighten security by showing people these weaknesses, therefor making MS better in the long run.

How many years have we heard this same politically correct statement? And how many more years are we going to have to hear it?

MS is TOTALLY TO BLAME!!

It sells hardware and newcopies of XP Pro to fools who think THAT would help!

MS has had the chance over 20 years to re-write the OS to stop the hackers but has only delivered lip service.

This is bad news for Mac users, since we all know that Apple will begin shipping PCs in a few months.

If MS has done such a lousy job, then why does *nix have about twice as many proven vulnerabilities?

1. This is not a wonderful thing. Your doctor's office probably uses Windows computers, as does your landlord...and maybe your payroll department. Something bad happening to a large number of Windows computers is not funny; it's bad for everyone.

2. Kerrigan, Apple will NOT ship any Windows computers. The hardware is irrelevant; viruses attack the operating system. This particular exploit is 100% OS, not even Java or MS Office Macro language. Apple computers WILL NOT BE IN ANY WAY AFFECTED BY IT.

3. A good antivirus package will be a useful tool in preventing infection through this exploit. Not only do Windows AV programs examine the content of downloads and emails, they watch for unexplained or unusual system calls, and alert the user so such calls can be blocked.

I believe DEP prevents this exploit, and firefox/opera alert you with some kind of exception first, essentially youd have to give the go ahead to get infected.

You have a library of comments following that link from many people who know about the update process for UNIX and Linux. If you read maybe the first 10 or so, you'd see the major difference between Microsoft's 800+ vulnerabilties, and the various unicies' 2000+ "vulnerabilties."

Yeah, but the "hacker proof" feature won't be apart of the initial release, but available for download in 20 years.

that list was only looking at the ADDITIONAL 800+ flaws they found THIS YEAR. they didn't count the 15K + flaws already on the list.

Ugh, this is ridiculous. Not to mention bad. I'm still on a Windows PC, and I really don't like the idea of having to be afraid of images now. Not to mention the fact that the vast majority of computers uses Windows, including important databases worldwide. ****ing hackers...

At least the hackers were kind enough to disclose the exploit, as opposed to advantage of it silently for weeks if not months. It's also a good way to teach the world to think twice about blindly purchasing PCs.
