I'm working on a logo that has a solid element into which I would like to inscribe some text (make it "see through" so the background color, whatever it is, can show through the solid element). The solid element is a rectangle with a circular clipping mask over it (imagine a fishbowl half full).

I've tried to convert the text to a compound path and then use the compound path as a clipping mask. When the text's path is on top of the solid shape, the text's path becomes filled (i.e. turns black). When place it underneath the solid shape, neither object is filled.

Are there any better ways to go about this? I've tried Pathfinder with similarly disappointing results. I'm assuming this can be done. How?

Before you mask the rectangle with the circle, you should use pathfinder to knock the text out of it. If I understand your request properly. I know you said you tried it, but that's the only way I know of.

I hadn't released the circle clipping mask before, but I've done so now. Trying to knock out the text with pathfinder, though, either has the effect of making the rectangle transparent or outlining the text with black. Any ideas?

if i'm getting what your want i would...

1. kill the clipping masks -- this is a logo and you client will be better served without them.

2. recreate the half-full fish bowl by way of the pathfinder -- create the circle, create a rectangle to crop it as you desire and wala.

3. create the text and convert to a compound path.

4. use pathfinder to knock the text out of the fishbowl.

that should do it.

Great advice everyone! The logo turned out great. Pathfinder is a real boon. Glad I know the ins and outs of it now.

Sort of. The compound path would do funny things with the fill of the text. The pathfinder cropping worked great.
