http://www.resexcellence.com/hack_ht...06-24-03.shtml

Or give this a shot. http://www.stanford.edu/~keaka/visage.htm
It's not compatible with Panther, though it could help anyway.

I've done this mod for the CAC login window (Screenie).

It's pretty easy to do but it involves modifying system resources. Not just changing the image out, you have to modify .nibs too. I'm sure it could be done with the regular login window, but... I'm not sure exactly which resources control the regular login window since I've only modified the CAC login.

You can screencap the login window if you have the root user enabled (which you should not). Or at least you could (I'm sure you still can).

Actually taking the screencap involved using a remote login from another computer and the terminal.. I only knew how because of a hint at MacOSXhints but they seem to be down right now.

For the CAC login screen, the stuff you need to change is:
/System/Library/CoreServices/SecurityAgent.app/Contents/Resources/loginpanel.tiff, to the actually image of the DoD logo (or another military one of your choice, which can be found at /System/Library/CoreServices/SecurityAgentPlugins/SCLoginPlugin.bundle/Contents/Resources/).

The .nib file that needs changed is at /System/Library/CoreServices/SecurityAgentPlugins/SCLoginPlugin.bundle/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/login.nib
You need to change the size of the apple logo to the same size as whichever military logo you choose.

That's about it. No photoshop involved..unless of course you want to use it instead of Preview to convert the Dod logo (which is a .gif) to a .tiff.

Wouldn't the Photoshop way be easier though?

The original poster wanted to change the login panel in panther..photoshop couldn't do that.. Unless you're talking about making my screenie, which would be easier, but at the time I took the screen capture I thought it was pretty cool to have the login be DoD..

Actually, using Photoshop to scale the logo to the size of the existing Apple supplied logo and backing the original one would be easier considering that you would not risk messing up the nib.

I've done it with the CIA logo.

Actually, if you only modify the CAC setup there is very little risk, because if you somehow mess them up really bad you can just restart in single-user mode and turn off CAC from there.

A little like this, as I said earlier...

Come on guys, I don't think this user is using a CAC anyways so stop confusing the issue.

If all you want to do is replace the is Apple logo, then quite simply do the following:
1. Create an image with transparency in PS and resize it to 90X90 pixels.
2. Save it as a tiff with a .tif extension.
3. Copy your logo to the desktop.
4. Open up terminal located in /Applications/Utilities/.
5. Type in the following:
cd /System/Library/CoreServices/SecurityAgent.app/Contents/Resources/
sudo cp applelogo.tif applelogo.bak
sudo cp ~/Desktop/younewlogo.tif applelogo.tif
6. Close your terminal and check out the new login screen.

To reverse it:
cd /System/Library/CoreServices/SecurityAgent.app/Contents/Resources/
sudo cp applelogo.bak applelogo.tif

I think MacOSXHints.com has some info on it. I think turning it on and off is as simple as "sudo cac_setup" and "suco cac_setup -off" or something like that. To get the department logos you have to modify the login panel as mentioned.
