Im deciding between the dell 24" lcd and the dell 30" lcd and the only thing thats holding me back is I wont be able to have my cable box go directly to the monitor (small apartment) and I wouldnt be able to use HD material from the cable box obviously. so Im wondering is there anything like the eyetv product line that allows you to input an HD signal to your mac? not antanae based...just HDMI or DVI into the mac? btw Im using a macbook pro so PCIe cards are outta the question.
thanks guys!!

Doing that would be cost (and likely file size) prohibitive because you'd be trying to capture an uncompressed HD stream. Honestly it would be cheaper to buy another TV.
How big is your apartment? 25' HDMI cables are $30 and 35' are available.

It's not going to look as good as an HDTV. Since the 30" screens are actual HD resolutions, you're going to see some bluriness due to the signal trying to fill in with the existing physical pixels, whereas a TV has a specific number of pixels dedicated to HD. You're better off buying an HDTV.

But the 30" higher resolution screens are going to look much better than the 30" HDTVs when used as a monitor. And since the 30" monitors have more pixels than the 30" HDTVs, the upscaling shouldn't look too bad.

Yes, you can watch HDTV on the 30". Just plug it into your cable box via HDMI or component. You were trying to involve your Mac between the cable box and the display, which is the difficult part. The Dell displays even support Picture in Picture and Picture by Picture, so you can watch TV and use the display with your Mac at the same time.

just get a HD box from you cable company, they usually have a DVI or HDMI or component video outs on them and just plug the monitor in.
