When I restart or log in the OSX splash screen comes up and 'Waiting for network initialization' seems to stay up forever. The rest of the startup process goes quickly after that. I don't have a network. Is there something that I have enabled that makes the OS look for this? Also towards the end of the splash screen 'Please turn off personal web sharing and restart' appears for a few seconds and then the process completes. Everything is humming along fine; I just wondered why these appear. Thanks in advance.

Your mac is trying to find a DCHP server to connect to but can't.

You have DCHP enabled in the Network preferences.

Change it to manual ip address and it should not cause you those problems.

I have a cable connection that has been static since day one. Will altering this setting change that? I would like to keep my IP address as long as I can.

Without knowing more, it sounds to me like the system is trying to connect to a network(s) that may not be there.

Something like a network sever or other computer that you connected to? It's a guess, but that's where I'd look.

I had this problem a while back...can't remember quite how I fixed it, but I'm sure it's something in the Network panel of System Preferences. Is Appletalk active?

Are you using 10.2.x? I remember in 10.1.x I had this problem, but updating to Jag cured it and I haven't seen it since.

I saw exactly the same behaviour today while rebooting after updating Quicktime. The problem was I had PPTP enabled in the Network Port Configurations (under Network in System Preferences). This after some experimenting with VPN:s. Disabling PPTP solved the boot-delay.

Check your Network Port Configurations.
