Hello,
Powerbook 12" 1.5GHz, Leopard.
Even if the router is near, the computer does not see any network.
I have replaced the airport card (A1026)and reinstalled OSX.
The airport card is fully inserted, the antenna well connected, System Profiler sees the card.
(another macbook pro 13 sees the router and all the networks in the neighborhood)

NOTE: Before I changed the airport card & reinstalled Leopard, the original card triggered kernel panics: the mouse would freeze, I had to force reboot.

If someone got this problem before, I would appreciate your help.
Thanks for your time & help

Does the old PB see any networks at all? Is this a hidden network you're trying to connect to?

Are you saying the SSID doesn't even appear in the Airport menu or that you can select the network, but it just won't connect?

No, the powerbook does not see any network. Even if the routers' SSID are public

my ibook is doing the same thing. the airport card in mine was also involved in a kernel panic. different machine though. airport card shows up as being in place but not connected to any network and the ibook refuses to look for a network as far as i can tell. i'm going to sell the ibook so no big deal however digifant's post makes perfect sense to me.

Only thing I can suggest is check the connections. Make sure the card is firmly seated and the antenna cable is firmly plugged in. If it still doesn't work, there's not much else to be done. The logic board could be bad or the antenna could be damaged.

Put the PowerBook right on top of the router, close as you can get it. Then search for the network. If it shows up, the antenna may be damaged. Can't think what else would fit those symptoms.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Thanks Waragainstsleep, but I already did this.
It's not a matter of signal strength.
I also tried NetStumbler, still does not see any networks

Then its one of the following:

Software - Boot from another installation and see if the behaviour persists;
New Airport card is faulty too;
Airport card socket is faulty;
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

and there are some usb wifi adapters that will work...

but Waragainstsleep has a great suggestion about checking a fresh installation first...

I already did a clean install from fireWire drive (the superdrive is broke since ++years)
If the socket is kaput, why would system profiler see the card as functional?
I also did hardware test with techtool & diskwarrior.
