Does anyone know of a freeware or shareware basic html editor that is fairly easy to use? I am not trying to do anything but post a simple mac.com homepage that gives me a littlle more flexibility of the templates given on the iTools page. I just want to dip my little toe in the water of webpage design--no ambitions of becoming a power-user! I also don't want to spend $100.00 or more on a commercially available program that I may or may not use that much.

Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Start by going to versiontracker.com to look for the type of freeware/shareware you need.

OK... did that. Found no freeware or shareware WYSIWYG basic html editors. Did download a fun Quicktime movie there of dogs singing "Jingle Bells," however.

Anyone else?

There used to be an app called AOLpress that was half-way decent... but AOL stopped developing it and I don't believe there is anywhere on the net it still exists.

And sorry, I deleted my copy a while ago. I forget why

There is a real simple one called HTMLPro. Its old - and someone form my school showed it 2 me. You paste in a document into one window - and you see it translated to HTML in the other window. I like it because you can both edit you plain text as well as your html directly.

Thanks, Crazy Johnson. I looked it up--it's only $5.00! I haven't downloaded it yet, but it looks like it might be "just the ticket." (I also looked up AOLpress, and as MacFreak suggested, it is not available for the Mac.)

The absolute best WYSIWYG HTML editor available for free is Netscape Composer, a component of Communicator. I've been using it for years with no trouble at all. I've been able to do just about everything I've wanted to composition-wise, and the pages are identical in Netscape and IE, both Win and Mac versions.

On the pay side, I like FileMaker HomePage 3.0

Interesting that you should mention Netscape Composer, iMacMike! I did come across that one when looking for AOLpress. I will check it out! Thanks for the tip.

WYSIWYG editors are picky with images. You have to save the image in just the RIGHT place on the server. It gives me peace of mind (coding my own HTML and CSS) that I know where my images are, my links are going, and that I am not using �& nbsp ; EVERYWHERE.

Wissywig (or Wizziwig) is correct pronunciation (at least here...)
I once read that, on the east coast, SCSI was pronounced "sexy" (as opposed to "scuzzy")
"Sexy" is actually more correct (in terms of pronunciation) than "Scuzzy" though

It's actually not "sexy" its "s-cs-i" but the "cs" is pronounced like an 'x'

Whoa, how'd ya manage to doubel-post with another post by you in-between? I've never seen that before.

As for those sites, they look great for stuff done in BB Edit and SimpleText! Me? WYSIWYG is the only way I can make decent-looking web sites (aside from Flash, of course).

Thanks for the helpful responses! I personally like "wizzywig" as the pronunciation, maybe because it reminds me of Dickens's character Fezziwig from "A Christmas Carol."

I am really just wanting to mess around with web design a little. The iTools templates look nice and are incredibly easy, but it might be fun to see what I could come up with on my own with a little help from Mr. Wizzywig....

If you don't mind spending just a bit, megamacs.com has an older version of golive(v3) for $15. Add a couple of bucks for shipping, and you've got a very good wysiwyg editor for about $20.

I have been using a Pagespinner for about 2 years I love it. It has a lot of flexiblity and is easy to use for beginners and has a lot of extras for the more advanced user. It's a shareware and i think it only costs $25 dollars. I'd highly recommend anyone downloading it and checking it out. I used it for about 6 months until I finally got around to buying the full version.

The other thing I am sort of looking for in an html editor is one that won't add a lot of stuff to my extension folder, etc., or take up a lot of space on my hard drive.

A very nice WYSIWYG HTML editor is the "HTML" edit that comes with MacOS X.

Thanks for all the helpful information. There are way more possibilities out there than I never would have dreamed possible.

Bleen: I haven't taken the OSX plunge yet (I guess I'm not an early adapter!), but will look out for the OSX html editor when it comes out later this year.
