My stepfather is setting up a mac for a previously PC-only user. He wants to set up a shortcut/alias on the desktop that would open the home folder (similar to a "My Computer" scenario. I asked him why, since when you open a Finder window, it's automatically in the left bar. He says it'll just be easier to explain to the user. Told him to try "make alias", drag the little icon of the open window to the desktop - and neither worked.
Is it even possible?

Hold down Apple + Option while you drag the icon to the desktop, that should make an alias. Also, make sure you're dragging the home folder from the HDD and not from the side bar.

The other option is to go to the Finder Menu Preferences and turn on the option to show Hard Disks on the desktop. I think that more resembles Windows than putting the Home Folder there.

well, "My Computer" isn't the home folder on a PC. do you mean "My Documents"?
if you want My Computer, you want the hard drive to display on your Mac dekstop...that is a Finder preference.
if you want My Documents, Apple + Option and drag as mentioned above will make the alias of the home folder on your desktop
