So, about $3500 for the high end Mac with more RAM and an extra HD, then $3300 for the 30" monitor and $600 for the card to drive it, $7400. Add in another $500 for AppleCare (you're really going to take any chances with this rig?).

Yeah, like hotcakes at a bake sale like none most of us have ever seen.

for those who haven't got IRC access or can't view the macrumors page...

Most revolutionary feature: searching. too many folders now on our hard disk.
How to solve it? We already have solved it. in iTunes, you can find a song by title artist, album etc...
in a second, just by typing into the search field.
Apply to the entire system. "Spotlight" search tech. You can ask it stuff like
find my keynote presentation by phil which I opened last week.
reliant on metadata
Can search in mail, addressbook etc...
System Preferences - removed bar at top. Uses spotlight tech
example of helping people find stuff in existing app.
Spotlight is system wide. upper right hand corner is a mag glass button
click it. get a search field. I get a popdown list of all sorts of things
images, mail, contacts etc...
Full context indexing (pdfs etc..).
Next generation MPEG4. h264. scalable. Apple is adopting.
adopted for hi-def DVD
Coming in Quicktime/Tiger.
Introducing Frank Cassanova to demo it
"the efficiency of the codec is abosolutely incredible"
onto Safari
Now: Safari. We're going to take it a step further. New thing - RSS.
Get all this data from sites and format it how you want. List of site that offer RSS sites (MacRumors, surprisingly, was not mentioned... though we do have one )
Wouldn't it be great to aggreate rss feeds and search through them for things you
want? Demoing Safari's RSS reader.
New search field in Safari for RSS. Shows search in Google, but says there's a delay by days.
Instead can search RSS feeds, and presents them together.
Join #macrumorschat if you would like to chat with other about the Key Note.
New tech: Core Image and Core Video.
doing processing in graphics processor (GPU), not the CPU.
all done with floating point precision
realtime filters. over 100 professional quality
filters. just like audio units, you can extend with image and video units to extend it any way you want. similar to audio units/coreaudio. avail to dev to write any apps
they want.
Similar to core Audio, provides APIs, tools for developers for manipulation of media.
(audio,video,images)
Demoing Core Image/Video.
coverage by macrumors.com
I'm just c&p'ing the IRC chat here.

Still 3 years before Longhorn.

It doesn't surprise me, though. We had heard that Apple was going to slow down their OS X release schedule. Also, from what I've seen, 10.3 is pretty damn stable.

Yeah, I'm more than happy with Panther. I find it to be extraordinarily stable. And the only parts of my G4 that are original are the motherboard and the power supply. So if anybody would have stability problems, it would be me.

I wonder what they're basing their search technology on. Now I can see why the Longhorn posters were put up. Like I said in another post today, Tiger wil probanly be the OS X version out when Longhorn is released.

Very true. One thing Apple aren't mentioning. Is that virtually all Maya sales are in pre-owning Mac studios, and virtually none in the film business. Maya on Mac has brought nearly zero sales of Macs by non-Mac post houses that use 3D.

But, the graphics card issue is one major show-stopper, and the reliance on ATi is a killer too, bad choice for 3D. Also, if Apple hope to start getting any presence in the 3D animation business, they need to ship out G5's at a fraction of the current cost, cost and performance being a major factor on sales.

Damn, they even copied the Konspose from Konfabulator.
I feel sorry for the developer of that lil app...

Well, this means that Pipeline is also real. That's going to be one of the "Killer Apps" for Tiger, IMO. Sounds way cool.. can't wait for it to be announced.
