I recently downloaded separate files that are supposed to be combined together. They are all .zip files but they are labeled so they say ".zip.001", ".zip.002", and so on. The system thinks that these numbers are file extensions, so it doesn't recognize the file as a .zip, and it can't be opened. When I remove the numbers it is recognized as a .zip, but there is an error when I try to extract it.

Besides the files themselves being weird, I need an application that can combine these files for me. I know of ones that support .rar files, but I don't know about .zips. I have Tiger, by the way.

The Unarchiver may be able to combine them.

Although, the Unrchiver may work for your .zip files, MacHacha is what you want.

The Unarchiver only works when combining split archive files. MacHacha can combine any split files, e.g. unarchived video files.

If you're comfortable on the command line, cat will do it. The command is "cat filename.zip.* > filename.zip"

Should that have been a double >> perhaps?

I think double angle means “append” whereas single angle bracket means “create”. The single one makes sense here because the cat command will already be outputting the files one after the other.

This is correct. If you wanted to append #2 to #1, then #3 to that, you could use ">>". Cat will concatenate all the files together, and write that whole thing to the file.

Okay, i wasn't sure exactly how cat would process the shell's expansion of the asterisk.
