I am trying (and, sadly, failing) to use my iMac (bondi blue, I think; the teal color) as a server. The server aspect works, but the screen WILL NOT TURN OFF. I am using Yellow Dog Linux. If anyone knows how to turn off the display without opening the iMac itself, please tell me.

More information would be helpful.
The Mac OS is capable of putting the internal display to sleep while the rest of the machine is still running. Otherwise, no you can't "turn off" the internal display. If you are curious about whether or not this works in Linux, you should post in the UNIX forum. The all-in-one macs are not intended to be used as headless machines.

Well, I think I discovered the mystery of the iMac handle: convenient for throwing saide iMac out of a large area, such as a window.
If you can't tell, I do not hold much respect for macs. Any, really.

If you are using X windows:
Try man xset. "xset dpms 60" will turn off the monitor in 60 seconds.
If you are using the console:
Try man setterm. "setterm -blank 1" will turn the monitor off in 1 minute.
NOTE: DO NOT do "xset dpms 1" ;-)
You also might try asking over at YDL.
