Menumeters! Menumeters! Menumeters! Menumeters! Menumeters! Menumeters! Menumeters! Menumeters! Menumeters! Menumeters!
That's probably the best freeware ever.
I also use Temperature Monitor Lite, and Menu Calendar (really nice pop-down calendar with superb iCal integration)

For most items, you can hold Apple down and drag the item where you want.
Menumeters, calender clock and F10 are must-haves. Winswitch and battery monitor are close.

umm... what is "F10"?
and i'd also be interested to see who's got the most menuextras in their menubar. so... could you post a pic if you think you're a contender? (or maybe just link to it - this isn't really a picture thread, so prolly not a good idea to clutter it up. )

F10 is a very comprehensive launch program.
For menu bars, check the desktop thread. You'll find some interesting variations.

for F10, beyond the prefs dialogue for interior / exterior transparencies and font, is there any other possible graphical tweaking? i've recently downloaded it thanks to this thread, and absolutely love the app.

The only two standalone menu extras that are permanently in my menu bar are WinSwitch ( v.3.0b just came out) and DeviantMenu, which I don't use much; it's just the most unique bit of software I've ever found for Panther. (You need to use it to clearly understand what it does.)
