Sources tell CBS 2's Scott Weinberger the death may be drug-related and that there were pills scattered around the room.

Diary of a Madman
Heath Ledger on how to become a Joker.
by Stax

November 5, 2007 - Actor Heath Ledger has peeled back the veil of secrecy on his portrayal of The Joker in next summer's The Dark Knight, revealing a glimpse at his process for bringing the Clown Prince of Crime to the big screen in director Christopher Nolan's sequel to Batman Begins.

In an interview with The New York Times, Ledger called the Joker a "psychopathic, mass-murdering, schizophrenic clown with zero empathy." The role has been "physically and mentally draining" for Ledger, and he has not gotten much sleep during shooting. "Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night," he said, adding that his body may be tired but that his mind "was still going."

The most interesting revelation in the New York Times piece is that Ledger has been keeping a "Joker diary" to prepare for the role. Ledger began keeping the diary four months before shooting commenced. The Times describes the journal as "filled with images and thoughts helpful to the Joker back story, like a list of things the Joker would find funny. (AIDS is one of them.) Mr. Ledger seemed almost embarrassed that the book had been spotted, as if he had been caught trying to get extra credit in school."

Hahaha, Mary-Kate Olsen's apartment and drugs? This is crazy, but the press is having a field day right now.

It'll probably be the same as when I watched The Crow for the first time.

Sad, such a young and promising actor. I can't say I like what I saw of him as the joker but his other films were top notch.

I think this will definitely push the ticket sales of the batman movie.

I'm sorry to hear of his Death. He definitely was a talented actor.

The image I keep seeing in my head is the picture of his 2-year-old daughter riding on top of his shoulders as he walked down the street. She won't have any memories of him in just a few more years.

This is really sad.

Don't be stupidly ridiculous. Everyone could make fun of him with impunity 10 hours ago, but now that he seems to have "accidentally overdosed" on pills he's sacred ground and off-limits?

As in life, so in death. Amen.

How can you say that

While the death of such a talented young person is indeed sad, it is in by no means anywhere near the tragedy of 911. thousands of people died at the hands of terrorist, Heath presumably died by his own hand taking drugs.

What rest? All other details were released as more information was discovered. That was the initial report: "dead, naked and with pills in Olsen's apartment."

Sorry, I've got little time for tears and shallow sympathies over some dead rich guy with drugs and a masseuse. Thousands of people died yesterday, and many of them lived more deserving lives and died more tragic deaths. This was some dude who acted from time to time, sometimes well. Congratulations; you worked your ass off to "make it big" and got the opportunity of a lifetime, and then you ****ed up and killed yourself. Pardon me if I look at what you could've done, and then give what you did do the finger.

But hey, I enjoyed 10 Things I Hate About You when I was a youngun, and I'm sure The Dark Knight will be great. Woohoo.

And you suppose the only other option is running your mouth? There's nothing shallow about showing basic respect for your fellow man. I don't feel particularly sad for most people who die, but I don't make it a point to stop by their funerals and crack jokes either.

Honestly, he just didn't strike me as the type that'd be drugging. Then I saw some of the images from the past year -- he didn't look so hot.

I did hear some interesting things about the lengths he was taking to immerse in the Joker role. Without any concrete facts, I wonder if the strain affected him somehow.

He definitely started looking pretty rough.

Do a quick Google search on the Joker diary he kept. He dived into the role 100%. That's apparently when his sleeping problems began.
