If someone were to buy, say, a used iBook G3 that had already had its logicboard replaced twice under warranty, and then it died again, after you bought it from the owner who had it die the first two times, do you think that Apple would send you a new iBook?

If you bought the laptop and it's still under warranty, though typically Apple requires the logic board to be replaced four times. That was the magic number for me.
