We had our Jesus 2000 hysteria, our Millennium Bug hysteria, our asteroid impact hysteria (this is one we should care about) our bird flu hysteria and our Global Warming hysteria.

I have good information that the next bit of government and environmentalist hysteria will be all about water!

They will say "Comrades, the world is suffering from a water shortage because of rapid industrialisation in the developing world!"

Watch this space because it is about to hit you from every angle and it is going to be worth $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to Our Beloved Benevolent Big Brothers!

You're a real piece o' work, you know that?
Being in debt and celebrating a lower deficit is like being on a diet and celebrating the fact you gained two pounds this week instead of five.

They won't listen to such logic! According to the Theory of Anthropogenic Land Growth, all bodies of water no matter how large will disappear! Logical solutions such as salination plants and industrial growth for poor people are not to be accepted!

Seriously? Did you stumble on an old Time magazine from like five years ago or something? We (the Insidious Ones) have been on this one for a while, I'm afraid to say.

Comrade, I wish they would skip the hysteria and just tell us how much they want from us! When it came to the banks they cut the hysteria very short and said it quickly "Thanks for the $700 billion, we gotta run now!"

Everyone who lives near the Great Lakes knows that there's something to this. People have tried to raid the Great Lakes before. But it won't be just because of rapid industrialization in the developing world; it will be because of growth in the desert Southwest and other arid areas (which make up "The Real America") where water demand will outstrip the capacity to meet that demand. Folks have already proposed to drain water from the lakes to ship overseas and to Arizona. A Canadian company once formed to drain water out of "their side" of the lake! The states and provinces (note: all socialist Blue Staets or socialist Canadians) made an agreement to not ship any Great Lakes water outside the region, ever, the end.

They are also ringing the bells in Las Vegas. Idiots made a town in the middle of the desert and now the taxpayers will have to pick up the bill to develop the dwindling water supply instead of the multi-billionaire casino barons.

So let's get this straight. Someone had the bright idea of loading water up into ships to ship it to foreign countries and this idea actually made it past the door of the bar/pub/saloon?

You don't realize how important and valuable fresh water is in some places. It can indeed be cheaper to load it up into tankers and ship it then it would be to desalinize ocean water.

I'm thinking we should form some kind of fund where everyone who lives in the states bordering Great Lakes gets a welfare check from the proceeds from others who come in and drink the water. Woohoo! I'm gonna be rich!

well...

If legendary oil investor T. Boone Pickens is as successful investing in the water industry as he was investing in oil, it may pay to follow his lead. Chris Mayer of Daily Wealth recently wrote the following article ("A Refreshing Idea") about the emerging demand, shrinking supply of usable water and the profit potential of investing in water rights.

from here.

Anybody watch Quantum of Solace and see that for once an action movie actually made a politically incorrect observation about an environmentally friendly businessman who uses Green language to grab a massive piece of land so he can control water rights?

Guess what people?

There's enough fresh water on the planet for everyone. Really, there is. Like, enough that we could 4x the population and still have enough water to go around (Drinkable fresh/blue water, not counting the oceans). Quit growing the damn water intensive crops in places that can't support it though (Rice in the fscking Southwest desert?! REALLY?)

Well they say the next gold is water.

They should also work into converting sea water into drinking water and yes I do not know how to do this.

It's called desalination. Many governments and companies could do this to supply water for everyone, even to transforms deserts into fertile land. That is, if Obama or carbon trading doesn't bankrupt them first. LOL.

That is very interesting; because why use drinking water to water your lawn or desert; instead use this new kind of water.

LOL. No no, Monique. Desalination has been used for a very long time to supply water around the world. We just need more desalination plants. And in places like West Africa, Brazil, China and India, we need to encourage people to stop throwing rubbish in the rivers. It's a very bad habit of theirs that makes river water highly polluted. Check out maps of Mumbai or Shanghai on Google Maps. Zoom in and see how dirty the rivers are.

Desalinization is also not the answer to many water-shortage problems, from a supply-transport-economics perspective.

Now that nearly all the industrialised nations have fallen in line with the carbon scam and the USA is bound to follow soon, the water shortage hype is starting to ramp up quietly in the background.

But so are dissenting voices:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rM9Ido_j3e8

This is the trailer for Flush it. This compelling documentary interweaves concerns about local water shortages, global water scarcity and toilet history with aspirations for grand projects and excellent loos in the developing world. Eritrean refugee Tiba pontificates from a bath full of bubbles on everything from desalination to pleas not to flush. Tiba informs us pit latrines stink, while experts help flush the crap and remind us that water can never run out. While the WWF tries to make us worry about our 'vitual' water use and our supposed 'water footprints' this film is guaranteed to wash away the guilt. Flush it will premiere at the Battle of Ideas 2008 at the Royal College of Art.
Remember, the environmental movement doesn't want you to flush anymore either! Fight Greens now!

"Water can never run out" is such a disingenuous phrase. Perhaps the global water budget may remain the same, but water can, and has, up and move away from where it's needed by humans, often because of careless and irresponsible use. There are lots of areas in the Canadian and American midwest where this problem is becoming a greater and greater concern.

As for the bit about the loos, I'm not so sure about.
