a magazine recently reviewed the ipod to good reviews, but on a side note a reviewer recommended to rip your mp3's at 192 with VBM for optimum sound quality/compression. so what do you rip at, what do you think is the best setting for ripping mp3s?
one post closer to five stars

I use VBR for all my encoding. In iTunes that is 128kbps minimum encoding rate, and 'highest' vbr encoding quality. All in all, the files end up just under 140kbps on average. The sound quality is excellent on this setting, even better than 160kbps in my opinion... And file sizes are about 1mb smaller per song depending on lenghth in comparison. In my opinion anything over 160 is overkill, unless what you're encoding has content prone to distortion.

192 kbps CBR is my setting, you'll need really good speakers to hear any differences.

I use LAME and iTunes... LAME option: --r3mix -b 112, sounds great and less space.

80kbps VBR Highest setting (80-320kbps).

This clearly sounds better than encoding at continuous 128kbps, and is significantly smaller.

I admit I SOMETIMES do hear slight artifacts that I don't hear at CBR 160kbps, but it's really insignificant, and I love the fact that I'll get about 2000 songs on my iPod this way.

256kbps, I like the extra quality, plus it's not overkill when you consider that my entire music collection only takes up 3.5GB. Might as well use the extra space to make the music sound good.

128 and stereo.. I know I could go higher, but I really feel no need to... It allows for more "goodness" in my iPod!
