Dvorak is gone! I wanted to try it out, and see how it goes. But I cant even try because it isn't there. How do I get it back? How did I lose it in the first place?

Look inside your Mac HD/System/Library/Keyboard Layouts/ - folder. See Dvorak.bundle there?

There is nothing there at all. I thought that was just for added layouts?

/Library is for added stuff (and so is ~/Library for added stuff for the user only), but /System/Library is for the system. I have a Dvorak.bundle in there. If you don't try reinstalling it using Pacifist.
I believe there is no independent research that ever proved that the Dvorak layout is superior.

None is needed to prove that the Dvorak layout is superior.
It was designed explicitly based upon statistical analysis of letter combinations in the English language, to minimize finger travel.
The research was done before the keyboard was even designed, as it were.
Try it and see: The Qwerty Keyboard Layout Vs The Dvorak Keyboard Layout
