Certainly less obnoxious than a popup, but still cheating y'all, and it messes up the formatting (note the right side of the page).

Giant Ford ads are still in play, and you can add giant Shutterfly ads to the giant mix.

I got ONE giant Ford ad over the weekend that repeated several times over about 20 minutes (same ad every time). It also loaded kind of slowly so it was doubly irritating. And it was while I was working on something that took my attention, so when I remembered that I should capture the URL for the ad, it was gone.

If that has value, here's the Shutterfly link:

Yeah, Shutterfly has been pestering me this evening. Not taking up the whole page (I'm using my iPad), but it's certainly annoying.

I had plenty of Shutterfly over the weekend, and on Monday, Ford came back. But so far today it's been pretty quiet, at least for me.

Got the giant blender too.
Click address.
Lots of shutterfly over the past week.
To be clear, I have no objection to the ads. It's just that they are majorly oversize for the banner space. Only an annoyance for desktop users, but a killer for those stuck on small screens.

As someone on mobile, my only issues are:
1) It borks the strip of MacNN blue on the right, making everything look unbalanced.
2) I think MacNN should get paid more for bigger banners.
If number two isn't a problem on your end, fix the code to accommodate that size banner and consider it one less complaint to deal with.

I've been noticing this too. Though I recently upgraded to bigger monitors, and was wondering if ad servers were adjusting to the (theoretically) available size.
They're disobeying the height and width of the standard banner space. Though not just on the forums. I've been seeing routine HUGE banners on several sites recently, notably Ars.

The only forum I visit that doesn't have this problem is a very specialized one with in-house software and a very observant and compliant advertising population.
Worse than banner ads on sites you're logged into are the horrendous, scrolling, and often popping to top or bottom ads that show up on sites you visit because Google said what you were looking for was there. Atrocious!

No, it sure won't. And it's the same bloody ad, all the time. Get the hint, HP, I'm not buying a corporate product!
Seriously, this looks like an advertising service has something screwed up. The ad isn't just the wrong size, but it hasn't changed, at all, in at least a week (for me). That's not how banner ads are supposed to work.

OK, let's try this again. I'm not sure when it happened, but I've noticed the banners. They've been the right sizes for at least the last several days.
Even our friends from HP have been obeying the banner size. I'm not blocking any ads, and they're all as they should be.
Good going guys and gals - whoever attends to this.

I'm getting an Amazon ad. It started out huge (but loaded quickly) the first few times I went from one page to another on 'NN, but now it's behaving better and is only about the size banners here should be.
And it's showing offers "similar to" something I researched several weeks ago, not something I looked at yesterday.

MacNN sells ad space with specific size and (prohibited) "feature" requirements to an aggregator/wholesaler. Ag/Whole sells views/opportunities to individual advertisers (or to another ag/wholesaler). Advertisers may or may not heed the limits MacNN places on size and features, and/or may not get that data due to poor communication depending on the number of layers. It's not like the VP of Advertising for MacNN is haggling on the phone all day to sell ad space, but it's also not "good business" for the aggregators/wholesalers to incompletely, incorrectly or not at all pass on the limits a web site places on their advertising spaces.

Yeah, not yet. Hopefully the business office is actively pursuing this issue.
Hey, guys! What about an advertiser boycott? I can write slogans, and I'm pretty sure someone here knows music and costumes!
Seriously though, this really is a problem that management is aware of and is addressing. I have no idea how far out those spaces are "rented," so I don't know how long we'd have to put up with stupid advertisers.
