iTunes 12 - how do I get minimize to miniplayer toolbar icon back?

I'm hoping there is a hidden preference, because this is terrible! I'm not going to use a keyboard shortcut or use the full menu to switch players each time.

When playing a track, click on the little cover icon on the left of the progress bar!

That just expands to the album cover for me. Perhaps it's because I used a hidden preference before..

...and when you move your cursor over that album cover, it doesn't show any play/pause controls?? Because for me that's the miniplayer - I can also reduce the size of the cover to a simple miniplayer only view!
click the cover
this will open this view...
...and when you click here, you should get the miniplayer

That works, but how do I go back? Once in miniplayer view, I can't get back to full by clicking.
