Do you guys think games will run smoother with Panther, than with 10.2?

Does anyone here have Panther beta and have tested games on 10.3 vs. 10.2?

Thanks!

Warcraft III + Panther III = III

Haven't tried other games yet but there's an obvious performance improvement in WCIII

My guess is that any game that uses OpenGL will be better under 10.3.

I hope you are right!
So how much performance gain do you think Panther will give in UT2k3 or america's army?

Thanks!

My framerates slow WAY down in Medal of Honor: Allied Assault: Spearhead when running in Panther... it's kind of annoying.

In my experience, Starcraft has been worse in 10.3 and 10.2.8. It is unnoticeable on an eMac, but very noticeable on a first rev dual-USB iBook.

I just found this on a thread on macnn:

"from macbidollue

"Panther makes us wonder every day a bit more. "le_mackeux" on our forums posted the results he reached with BenchUT2003 under X.2.6 and X.3. He uses a G4 Quicksilver 933 with a Radeon 9000 and 1.5 Go RAM. Tests were done under 1280*1024 resolution with demo flyby-citadel

Under X.2.6:
Score 37.00
Min FPS 11.42
Average FPS 36.94
max 121.27

Under X.3:
Score 55.95
Min FPS 17.4
Average FPS 57.026
max 192.117

Score improves by more than 30% !"

I hope this is the case!

I love that Panther will actually make my current computer faster... very non-windows like...

Warcraft III on my Quicksilver G4 733 is almost unplayable...

Unreal Tourney 2003 on my single 533/radeon 8500 was unplayable in 10.2 It was made playable when upgraded to Panther. However, Medal of Honor plays crap super style now.

So far, quake 3 screams even more, Unreal 2k3 is MUCH faster and I have acully started to play it now, and I see increase in AVP2, but its still is the worst running game I have. Installing Sim City 4 now.

(DP 800, Geforce 4, 1.25 gig Ram) will report how they run on my 17 PB soon.

OS X is great it's all I use now as my main OS now that I got another Mac and I love it. I ordered my copy of panther as soon as I heard it was out for preorder and can't wait.

But as far as games go that's the only reason I keep my HP around. The only time I turn on my HP is to play games, mainly Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942 and UT2003. Games are just better on a PC, granted some games look and sound better on a Mac but with a PC you don't have to wait forever till the PC version becomes Game of the Year and then gets ported to the Mac (ahem UT2003 and others). UT2003 is new to the Mac and in Dec. UT2004 is coming out for the PC.

To be honest, you are never going to get descent performance on that machine.

UT 2003 is slow on my 700G4.

Yeah, but what graphics card do you have?
And do you have Panther?

This is what I don't get about people complaining about the price of 10.3.

If I sold a magic piece of software that you could install on ANY mac (with USB) and would give your games, GUI, etc a 20-30% increase in speed I could charge $200 a nobody would blink an eye.

Apple bundles the speed increase with another 149 other enhancements and people complain bitterly about paying $129. It just amazes me.

I must agree.
I have nothing against supporting apple, even if I have bought a brand new 15" and didn't get the upgrade for free.
129$ is a cheap price to pay to get all that extra performance to your system.

Hmmm, but had you sold us several magic pieces of magic software beforehand that made it slower in the first place?

I'm running 7B74 of Panther, and the move up from 10.2 was quite noticeable while playing UT 2003 on my dual 533, GeForce 2MX rig. Granted, I will never get that great of a frame rate from my config, but the improvements in Jaguar are definitely noticeable. Game doesn't play too bad with all the settings turned down.

Wow!
It looks like UT2k3 will run better with Panther, and so should america's army, since it built on the unreal 2k3 engine.

Can't wait!
