Would anyone like to share their (pre)-10.3.3 experiences?

Well I'm still on 10.3.2

And so far Classic games need to be booted into OS9 to run well, and my newest game (No One Lives Forever 2) is unplayable because of some QuickTime problems. It plays every sound file in the game right at the beginning of the game. It's weird, and no fix is available. It's a nice $50 coaster...

Hehe...Blizzard has yet to tell us what that's all about.

Is it OpenGL or their code? Somehow I think it's Blizzard's fault.

Actually those that do have 10.3.3 are everywhere but here.

Someone in the OS X forum says Quake 3 textures don't show up correctly or at all in 10.3.3.

Halo runs identically on .3 as it does in .2.

That is the only game I have tested, though.

I tested Halo on a couple of different resolutions, at both low and high settings, and found only 1fps improvement across the board on my albook 1.25 with Radeon 9600 Mobility, 512mb.

www.macosrumors.com has reported better 10.3.3 results with unspecifed games.

Supposedly the next Halo patch is supposed to increase the framerate %50. At least thats what the developers said.

Heh....takes me back to the days of pre-OS X 1.0 when everyone was shouting from the mountaintops how OS X's updated OpenGL frameworks would allow across-the-board game improvements of at LEAST 30%...when the reality turned out to be a drop of about the same, everyone quickly shifted gears.

I hope Diablo 2 is finally playable using OpenGL.

I have 1.1, but D2 still slows to a crawl when a monster or other player is on the screen with me. -_O

Still confined to Software rendering.

I can fun D2 perfectly on my 17inch Rev.A Powerbook. Even on bnet, not much lag, if any at all. The new 1.10 patch fixed all that unlike 1.09 when the game is almost unplayable on bnet. Unless you really want to play 3 fps.

800mhz G3 iBook 640mb ram 32mb vram ATI 7500.

I get 8-30 fps (variable to lag) in Software rendering. However, I have consistent frame rates.

I get 0-40 fps with OpenGL, with highly sporadic frame rates. (When it drops to 0, it generally stays there till the monsters are gone, or until I am dead).

You have to keep in mind that Apple's OpenGL does not take the math shortcuts DirectX does to achieve its faster results. OpenGL is used by the scientific and academic community in addition to gaming. So Apple is careful not to compromise accuracy and precision. Maybe what they need is a gaming mode or flag...

That's a really good point, stingerman...but the funny thing is, on my brother's gaming pc (p4 1.53ghz with radeon 9000pro), he _insists_ on using opengl because directx either makes his games oodles slower and/or a bit less pretty.

From my limited experience on his machine, I'd have to agree. DirectX does seem a lot slower in the graphical department and a lot of it's dithering and other routines just seem a lot, well, "shoddier".

He really gets disappointed when games offer no opengl support. Could it just be his video card? I mean, directx performs like a dog for no reason, it seems. Whatever, at least we're not missing much.

A new 10.3.3 build is out...can someone test Quake 3 (which had texture problems in the build that was pulled) and maybe UT2k4 performance?

"They forgot to mention the HUGE OPenGL update that would be in 10.3.3!!

This update should have following features:

Improved speed for games and OpenGL apps going from 10 to 30% depending on system!!!

It should fix a lot of bugs that affected a couple of apps: MAya, Lightwave and other 3D apps that use openGL..

10.3 broke more things than you can imagine!

I don't say it isn't a good OS, it rocks! especially with the new features, but it has cost me and a lot of other people a lot of years of our lives the last 4 months! All because of the OPenGL problem"

you may be able to run that but what about when World of Warcraft hits... based on their track record with Mac ports and the ability to piss me and it seems every other mac user off, I believe that even though the projected minimum is a 1GHz, you will need 2GHz minimum and the 64bit G5 won't help and 45GHz for it to run smoothly. 10.3.3 may not help us one bit.

Hmm, don't buy that one. Sounds a little too good to be true. Especially considering the source.

I know OpenGL is being improved, but I'm not expecting anything that dramatic.

Me neither...if it were true, the forum would have been stormed with people claiming games running much faster. I haven't heard a peep from anyone, anywhere about games running better or faster.

In fact, the last thing I heard (before the two newer builds) was that Q3 textures were messed up. Hopefully that's fixed.

I hope 10.3.3 fixes the problem with Panther seeing my LCD as a CRT and causing out of range errors on my monitor with some full screen games. It's been pretty discouraging.
