I don't have a recording of it. I'm trying to find one, but it's been bugging me for years.

It starts around June here in NJ. It's three fast noises, a pause, and then a repeat. Like "eh eh eh <pause> eh eh eh". I'm sorry I can't describe it better. If I find an audio clip, I'll post it.

Cicadas?

I know the sound you're talking about, but never really thought about it.

If there's sometimes, in between the "eh eh eh <pause> eh eh eh" a different sound, then it could be a Gecko (if you have those in NJ, which I doubt)!

Sounds like tree frogs to me, but I don't recall having those in Jersey (of course I lived in the Pine Barrens, so what do I know?).

A common mistake. The katydid makes a similar noise to that of the mating call of the extremely territorial, aggressive and deadly poisonous Peruvian Death Mantis. They've managed to migrate all the way to New Jersey by embedding their larva into the phallic region of human males. Unfortunately, by the time you hear the "eh eh eh <pause> eh eh eh," it's too late.
