In a sign that no matter is too small to affect international diplomacy, the US State Department has issued an edict banning its longtime standard typeface from all official correspondence and replacing it with a "more modern" font.

Bush already got Ashcroft looking to put a halt to that change.

But in all seriousness, there was something about a halt being put to that, citing something about recordkeeping.

For the record, the new font is required to be used on all official State Department correspondence. This was, however, also true of the old font; in that aspect, it is no "more free" or "less free" as before.

That said, it does beg the question: don't these guys have anything better to do?

A passionate bureaucrat can work years on such a change. A masterpiece.

Times New Roman is fine, but what's with size 14pt? They trying to get a better grade by making their reports seem long?

Really, the standard should be Times New Roman 12. It may take a brave outsider to our corporatized two-party system to bring real change to the Government. Perhaps Ralph Nader will take up the issue!

ugh I hate Times New Roman.

Don't care much for courier either.

They should have gone with Helvetica IMO

Helvetica is the way to global peace and mutual understanding. It has a very soothing and multicultural effect. That's why subtitles are done in Helvetica.

Times New Roman, my god, these guys are really progressive', using that font.

BTW, I hate Times New Roman. The best font IMHO (serif font) is Bitstream Charter, no other font beats it in terms of legibility. Plus, they could keep the standard size at 12.

The closest thing to Charter is the freely available Gentium which includes letters for tons of languages.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

I bet it had to be a "standard computer font", so the only other choice was Arial.

Fascinating. I seem to recall a little thread about the use of the word 'courriel' versus e-mail in official French government communications. If I recall, this was a symbol of the socialist tendancies of the godless frogs, and much villification was cast about. I await (with baited breath) the same reaction from the right-leaning members of this board now that the U.S. government has done something EVEN MORE SILLY!

Just downloaded Gentium. Nice looking font. Just wish it had cyrillic support (and I told them as much). Are there any fonts out there with full Unicode support?

I think Gentium is the closest thing you can get.
I would also consider using Gentium, but there is no bold or bold italic version of it yet which disqualifies it for my usage.
