Heh. Great picture of an ATM. Microsoft Security Center warning that it's detected a Trojan Horse. On an ATM. Other great examples if you scroll through this Slashdot discussion of an article about where Windows is installed, but shouldn't be.

(ImageShack, you might have to click through.)

I was just reading the slashdot article on this and have seen an ATM running windows that crashed.
However, I have also seen some flavor of linux crash when flying to Amsterdam on KLM. About a half hour into the flight, the linux machine that controls the inflight entertainment crashed and I got to watch 300 little screens reboot linux.

An operating system is often only as stable as the applications that run on it. Just be glad the flight control software didn't get a virus.

Wow, how do you get a trojan on an ATM?

Because the ATM runs Windows, it needs to updated once a month on patch Tuesday. I would assume the trojan took a ride with the technician when he/she updated it.

I always wondered if you could buffer overflow an ATM machine and run code by swiping a specially crafted card. I've seen a few ATM machines in the mall with Solitaire running on them.

I can't speak for ALL financial institutions... but many farm out the management of the ATM's to a company like Diebold. The application that runs the ATM is usually supplied by them. However, the hardware itself (and the underlying OS) is owned by the institution, the ATM has a WAN/LAN link to the financial institution's network for account info etc..... some segregate the network out, others simply make it part of their corporate LAN. Hence, someone from operations can mess up the ATM, or the virus can be passed over from the corporate LAN.

And yes, in some instances... if you end up owning the ATM box... you can very well have access to the financial organization's entire network.
