[Updated with October 9 release date] A
few photos have emerged from the principle photography that is in progress for the Universal Studios biographical drama
Steve Jobs, showing actors Michael Fassbender (as Jobs) and Seth Rogan (as Steve Wozniak), with another photo capturing actor Jeff Daniels portraying former Apple CEO John Sculley. The film, which saw
numerous changes and drop-outs while still in pre-production, is filming in and around Cupertino.
The
Daily Mail offered the first pictures of Fassbender and Rogen together, showing the actors walking and chatting, dressed as they might have around the earliest days of Apple as a company. The film, which appears to include flashbacks throughout Jobs' life up to the 2001 introduction of the iPod, mostly takes place backstage at three key product announcements: the introduction of the Mac, the introduction of the NeXT computer, and the introduction of the iPod. Each keynote marked a pivotal point in Jobs' life, starting new chapters for him personally and professionally.
Several potential actors were linked to, and then dropped from, the lead role for a variety of reasons. An early change of director prompted one of the casting issues, as first director David Fincher had been keen to get Christian Bale for the part due to his strong resemblance to Jobs. Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin had worked together on the successful
The Social Network film, but Fincher and the studio couldn't agree on control over the marketing, and Fincher was axed. Bale bowed out, saying he wasn't right for the part, with incoming helmer Danny Boyle preferring Leonardo DiCaprio, who also turned down the role.
Other names were floated as well, but then the project also changed studios, with Sony opting to sell the film to Universal. Finally, however, the film appears to be underway, with Twitter users catching and posting glimpses of the production, such as the shot below of Jeff Daniels filming as John Sculley, the CEO who ousted Jobs from Apple in a struggle for control.
Other cast members include Adam Shapiro (
A Single Man) as Avie Tavanian, Kate Winslet as Mac marketing chief Joanna Hoffman, Michael Stuhlbarg (
Boardwalk Empire) as programmer Andy Hertzfeld, Katherine Waterston as Jobs' girlfriend Chrisann Brennan, and three young actresses will portray Jobs' first child Lisa Brennan-Jobs from childhood to young adulthood. Steve Wozniak is a consultant on the film.
