"Thieves stole also Branch's computer, cell phone, iPod, plus cash and credit cards, according to a spokeswoman for the singer."
Interesting how they used the term iPod, instead of MP3 player? They didn't say her Dell was stolen, or her StarTac was stolen.
It's great to see the iPod have such brand name recognition (where they don't have to explain the product's purpose or use a generic term). Maybe one day it will be like the brand name Kleenex, where it is more commonly used than the actual name (facial tissue).

The iPod is definitely close to becoming a household name. I see at least half a dozen people a day with one. When we started our painting series in my art class where when we met for class it would primarily be work time by professor mentioned "bringing in your iPods if you want to listen to some tunes or something." And everyone in the class knew exactly what he was talking about. That was cool.

No wonder. The iPod is the number one sold MP3-player in the world.
Even MP3-player is a household name for a player that I use mostly to play AAC.

It's great, isn't it?
I have people approach me all the time at uni - "Is that an iPod?"
I don't even have it visible - they tell either by the remote or the headphones.
I see loads of people with them (the headphones are a dead giveaway).
Truly, wonderful.

It's an insult to the iPod to generalize all MP3 players and call them iPods. Only the iPod is an iPod. If the product were not an iPod, they would have simply said "ipod-like cheap-a$$-substitute".

Oh its all fun and games now, but what happens when the unwashed masses start pointing at that Dell thing and saying "iPod!"? At least iPod is still reassuringly expensive.

yes, but soon Apple will pull an "Apple" and the iPod's market share will slip down to 10%. Then 5%. Then 3%.
