Hey,
I know you can do this in open/save dialogs, but I can't seem to find a way to do it directly in the finder:

Is there a way to key throught the Finder Sidebar? I've tried many things, including the keyboard preference "full keyboard access" but I can't seem to do this?

Can it be done?

It doesn't seem to respond to alpha characters, but my selection does move up and down in response to the arrow keys.

How on earth did you get the sidebar to respond to your arrow keys?

In more detail...

I have a plain Panther installation, no APEs, themes, or third-party system stuff. I have full keyboard access turned off.

When an open or save sheet is open, you should notice a highlight around the part of the sheet that has keyboard focus. By default, Save sheets have the focus around the text box where you type the name. Open sheets have the default focus around the right side where the columns are displayed. You can use the tab key to shift the focus among the elements. Tab until the sidebar is surrounded by the highlight. Then the arrow keys will move the selection up and down.

I already know how to do this in Open/Save dialogs.

What I'm asking is how, or if, you can do this in the finder.

If anyone knows if this is possible, let me know, before my head explodes.

Wow. I totally misread your question...sorry!

This can't be done in the Finder. However, you can navigate anywhere in the filesystem from the Finder window, so the inability to directly access the sidebar doesn't seem like a terrible liability--perhaps it just leaves room for future improvement.

You do have some keyboard shortcuts for Home, Computer, Network, Applications, and Utilities.
