Delay when formatting text in word

Does anyone else have this problem?
I'm using Word 2004 on 10.3 and find there is a ~2-3 second delay after formatting text i.e. changing text to bold etc etc. Basically I type some text in, select it, and then click on the bold icon (or any other one) in the formatting palette and unless I click on the text again it takes ~2-3 seconds for the text to become bold. This also goes for changing the font/size. In fact anything except changing the highlight colour - this results in an instant change, which is what I am sure the behaviour was under Word v.X. Am I wrong? This doesn't seem normal.
Any suggestions?
I've tried deleting prefs, MS user folders etc.
Thanks Ry

Also, this doesn't occur in either Excel or Powerpoint, there is no delay. Just Word and it's driving me mad!

I noticed the delay on mine as well. Word 2004 is horribly slow. I work with manuscripts that are 300-500 pages and doing any reformatting is a test of patience and forget about scrolling from the bottom of the document up. Usually I get frustrated and boot up my OS9 machine and use Word 2001 (which is the last good version of Word that MS made).
What may help a little is to turn off automatic spell check and live word count.

I tried this but it doesn't seem to remove the delay, it's frustrating as neither Excel or Powerpoint do it - the two apps I rarely use.
thanks Ry

i have this issue too, but on the previous version of word [whatever its called ] on my 1ghz powerbook, 512mb Ram, no word processor should need anywhere near this setup to run effectivelly, unfortunatlelly MS Word is **** [but i do like excel muchly ]
I've tried using NeoOffice and mellell and their both pretty good options [NeoOffice = free but ugly and in beta, mellell $39USDish]. Theres also Think Free Office which is a polished version of OpenOffice but judging by the fact that you just bought word you probably want to get the best out of it huh?
Im getting iWork tomorrow so hopefull i can ditch Word then
