Let's play a little game. Let's see who can get the best rig with $20,000 in monopoly money.

Rules:
1. No PC products such as a PC keyboard or PC computers (Dells for example). Mice will not count due to the lack of a good 2 button mouse on the mac side.
2. Prices must be up to 20,000 or below $19,980 will not count.
3. No buying 18 USB cables, for example, to get that last bit of money out of it.
4. List and prices, including grand total, must be included. Since taxes are unfair and they vary, tax will not count. VAT does not count. Shipping and any other billing will not count. Only the products' grand total.
5. Good luck

Also, follow the format as best as you can.

Here's my ideal setup.

1. 5x3 desk ($299) (seen at a furniture store)
2. Dual 2.5Ghz PowerMac ($4,424)
2GB Ram
2x250 HD
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL
30" Display w/23" second display
Bluetooth
8x SuperDrive
Gigabit Ethernet
3. Tactile Pro Keyboard ($99)
4. Kensington StudioMouse ($39)
5. Quicktime Pro ($29)
6. Production Suite ($1,299)
7. CS Standard ($999)
8. Stock Art ($380)
9. Doom III ($49)
10. UT 200 ($39)
11. Call of Duty ($49)
12. Halo ($49)
13. Epson SP 4000 ($2195)
14. 12" PB ($2,024)
768MB Ram
80GB HD
Combo Drive
15. 12" Case ($49)
16. AppleCare for PB ($349)
17. iPod 4G ($399)
18. iSight ($149)
19. Garageband Jam Pack 1 & 3 ($199)
20. iLife 05 ($79)
21. iWork ($79)
22. Belkin ADC-DVI Adapter & 20" Display ($1,328)
23. AppleCare for PowerMac w/ Display ($249)
24. 30" Display ($2,999)
25. DVDSP ThemePak 1-6 ($399)
26. Various keynote themes ($149)
27. LaCie BD Extreme ($449)
28. Nikon D70 w/ 18-70 ($1,299)

Grand Total: $19998.00 (cents rounded)

Dreams
Well that's one, let's see some crazy ones. I'd try to limit it to home thearter/pro/computer products, etc. No t-shirts or anything like that.

1- PowerMac dual 2.5GHZ, maxed
2- 30" Cinema Displays
1- 15" PB 1.5GHz, bells and whistles
1- 23" Cinema
1- Mac mini, maxed
1- 52" Samsung DLP projection (as a monitor for the mini)

That should be close enough. I don't feel like adding.

<practical mofo>
$8000 to pay off my credit card debt
$12000 to pre-pay half of my remaining graduate school tuition

I've got a 1GHz eMac and a 1GHz 14" iBook that will last me a few more years.
</practical mofo>

Then, I will buy the quad-G6 desktop with stereo-optic HUD glasses, transdermal haptic input devices, and implantable wireless Gigabit ethernet receiver. All for $4000.

Because Creep contradicted himself.

The topic said "If you had $20,000..."

And in his post he said

"Let's play a little game. Let's see who can get the best rig with $10,000 in monopoly money. "

Then his total came out to "Grand Total: $19998.00 (cents rounded)"

My bad. I changed it midway through the posting of the rules (since a good theater is 10k). Fixed.

The Mini only has 10/100 Ethernet, not Gigabit.

This annoyed me as well. I suspect that Apple may have done that to discourage clustering configurations.

Same here. If I had $20K, I'd use $9500 to pay off credit card bills. That leaves $10,500 big ones. Let's see...$7,000 to pay student loans and $3500 for Apple computers and goodies! *Sigh* Oh but to dream.

these are approximate and somewhat randomly dollar-converted:

$2500 for whatever is the high-end config of the smallest Powerbook next fall (*xfingers13.3"g5*)
$1500 for a Metric Halo Mobile I/O 2882 audio interface
$1900 for a Logic Control and extra 8 channels
$200 motorized fader box for field trips
$2400 for a decked-out 20" iMac G5 for the studio
$7000-$11000 for Hammond B-3 as backup/studio
$1000 for a nice Rhodes for the studio

Damn.

The keyboard list could go on indefinitely, and a second Mobile I/O could go there too. Oh, and a couple of nice mics. And a couple of nice compressors. And maybe an Eventide H3000 or so.

And some of the above is actually happening for me.

Hmm, the Mini is slight cheaper per GHz than the XServer cluster node (both configured at 512 MB). For distributed systems that don't require a lot of network bandwidth, these mini's could be quite good!

Cool - you even have a couple of hundred left over for a graphics card to actually turn that second display from a paperweight into a monitor.

He has a 6800 Ultra configured...

Oh and my dream setup would include a gaming PC and a non-Apple keyboard and mouse (because frankly, Apple's keyboard sucks almost as much as their mouse). So I guess I don't fall within the "rules."

Besides, there's no PCI video card for Mac that can drive a 30". Though we should be getting G5s with PCI Express at some point, and then you can put two 6800 Ultras in there if you want (assuming they have dual PCIe x16 slots).

OMG... imagine a dual 3 GHz G5 with dual 6800 Ultras (or dual X850 XTs) in SLI!
