I don't like most Powerbook mods, but I think this one is sweet. Tarsiers are awesome.

Sharpie markers are easier to obtain than laser etching apparatus and the results can look almost as cool.

Nice I would have gone with a design over a monkey though.

We have a laser etcher at work and I have used to to etch quite a few things on various things. I like to use it to personalize gifts for people.

I have never used it to etch on anything other than steel.

I would not think twice to etch anything I wanted on a computer. It's such a temporary item anyway.

What's temporary? The etching? I thought that it was permanent.

The computer.

The etching can be grinded/polished off. but it will leave the surface far from it's original finish.

In what way? Just because you don't like it (neither do I BTW) doesn't affect it's functionality in any way. The current owner might think it imporves it's appearance. And who knows, the "artist" might become VERY famous one day and this PB might become very valuable (i.e. John Lennon's napkin doodling or Picaso's early sketches).

I've been thinking of doing a cool acid etching to my iBook, but I just can't bring myself to do it.

Come on... even if he does become VERY famous... it looks nasty.

The tarsier picture is a 19th-century engraving from the Dover Pictorial Archive. And you've probably seen it before (see below):

Do I need the qualifier "in my opinion"?

In my opinion, one of the reasons we pay more for Macs (or are, at least, charged more for Macs), is because of the underlying aesthetics. This example, in my opinion, undermines the aesthetics of the object for a number of reasons.

It's also lo-tech. Sharpies aren't that permanent.

...If, by some fluke, the artist becomes "VERY" famous and some idiot pays top dollar to mount the PowerBook on his wall, my opinion will remain the same: it's ugly.

I was commenting on the comments about the sharpie drawing on the PB.

But thanks for the reference. I knew I had seen that image somewhere before. Just couldn't place it.

So does a lot of "art".

Hey, I said I didn't like it either. But value is based upon the bid of the highest bidder.

Nothing is permanent on this planet. Except the energy.

Now that, is an action that could truly destroy the value of the PB.

Gah. I'm still freaked out over all the people who put STICKERS on their 'books, let alone defacing them with a freaking Sharpie-marker! Jesus ****!

Laser-etchings could be put to cool use though, too bad neither of those examples were.

Once again we find out why GM is doing so well. So were you getting paid while you did this?

You don't understand the simple concept of a "repairman" do you. I work when things are broke. If things are broke, GM is losing money.

I am usually doing it on a Saturday or a Sunday. So I am getting time and a half or double time to do it.

Most, if not all companies related to the auto industry in Michigan aren't doing well, not just GM. You can't blame it all on the machine repair guy

My brother works for a tool and die (auto) in Lansing, and they are swamped...good friends of mine own 3 tool and die shops in northern lower michigan and they got out of auto about 3 years ago and switched to military and they are swamped...but all my engineer friends are waiting for that last paycheck this year (Big 3 and Audi/VW workers).

Michigan, more importanty SE Michigan, is going to get hid hard in the next year is my guess...think Flint from the 80s but only worse. It isn't going to be good for the economy.
