I need something that will convert fairly large files. I've been using pdf online and it's great with smaller files, BUT, sometimes I need to convert large word files with graphics in them to .pdf, and they are too big for pdf online.

Any thoughts? TIA!

You can make a pdf from just about anything on OS X. With the file open, go to the menubar

File>Print>PDF button>select from the list.

The ability to reduce PDF file sizes from the Print dialogue is built into the OS, although the means to do it is a little hidden. Read this thread to find out how:

Excellent. This is so very helpful, everyone. I knew I could do this in pages and some specialty software for my field but had somehow missed it in Word!

It's not dependent on the application, it's built into OS X, so you can do this from any application that allows you to print.

Except Adobe Acrobat and Illustrator.

True, although you can just Save As.
