All I would like to do is convert a flash movie to a mp4 via quicktime but the size of the file doubles. The dimensions of the movie are the same what gives? is there anyway to avoid the filesize expansion while keeping quality near the original?

MPEG Streamclip (free) is your friend. You can adjust the quality and bitrate to achieve similar video quality to the original at a similar file size.

You determine the size by changing the bit rate of the video and audio codec. Click the Options button in QuickTime's Export-dialog to get to them. This Export settings dialog also estimates the resulting file size for the current settings you selected. You can make it half the size, the same size, double the size... Your choice.
