As I've been reading through this forums, it seems that for some reason lots of people refuse to call the iBook an "iBook."

I've seen:

iceBook
cubeBook
iceCube
littleTiBook
and my favorite: Chicklet

Is Apple's marketing that far off? What's wrong with just iBook?

I think it's just that the 1st ibook's look is so tied into the name. The new ibook so different. I have always liked the old ibook but, I never wanted one for myself. Yet, I wanted the new ibook as soon as I saw it (on the way soon). The new ibook connects w/ people differently so therefor the slang.

Chicklet is by far the cutest.

Would you just name a new baby - "baby"? Owning an iBook is a personal thing. Their is nothing wrong with just calling it an iBook. But the design has changed and it's a "sibling" to the new G4 PowerBook (named by others the TiBook) so people just like a name to give their new family member some personality. Just my opinion.

After Apple cut off the different colours, at least we need some colourful names for the electronic device which Apple insists calling "iBook". Apart from that, I guess most people name their iBooks individually. Mine will be the "Black Box". Actually, I have called every Mac "Black Box" so far. Maybe it's time for a new name... how about "Schaschlik"? Or "Iwan"?
Must think about it...

All those nicknames are just to differentiate the models. For example, if I just said that I had "problem X" with my iBook, you might tell me to check the handle, which would be ludicrous on a new Dual USB iBook. It's also why the PowerBook G4 is often called TiBook, Titanium, etc. There have been 50 computers named "PowerBook X," so some way of differentiation is needed. With PBs, it's usually the nickname (eg. Lombard, Wallstreet, Pismo). I'm surprised that this trend didn't stick with the iBook. I like "Marble" much more than iceBook and such. Oh well... who am I to start a trend?

I've been wondering, how does "P29" fit in to the new iBook?

Hehe... if nothing else, our nicknames for product shows that Apple has a very strong following... how many nicknames do Dell users use on their laptops other than "junk" ?

P29 and Marble were the two codenames for the iBook (Dual USB).

I always call my Macs with their codenames... I've got:

<font face = "courier">
mr_t - Macintosh Plus
aurora - Macintosh IIcx
road_warrior - Macintosh PowerBook 170
nevada - Power Macintosh 9500/200
pdq - Macintosh PowerBook G3 Series (300 MHz)
kihei - iMac DV SE (400 MHz)
mercury - PowerBook G4 (500 MHz)
</font>

My hard drive partitions are loosely named after the code names of the computers they symbolize. It's kinda hard to explain. I've got:

Artemis-school hard drive; we had G3 All-in-Ones in my high school journalism dept.
Yosemite-former startup disk; named after this machine's code name (G3 B&W)

My PowerBook 520c is Blackbird LC.

I like to call mine "Trouble". Because if anyone else messes with it they're gonna be in trouble.

I was watching CNN this afternoon, and they were showing "great gift ideas for dad". First, they showed some huge TV/Monitor combo deal, and then they picked up an iBook and started to talk about it.

It was interesting that the guy who was showing the iBook said, "Some people like to refer to this machine as the iceBook". Made me smile. hehe

Wattsy, you are amazingly rude and apparantly quite egocentric. Do you know how many people would tell YOU to 'get out more' for even browsing, let alone posting to, a message board about computers? If you don't like computers (and especially Macs) enough to appreciate (and enjoy) the 'geekiness' we feel about them, and why we do the strange things we do, why do you bother hanging out here? This is a forum for computer nuts. We do funny things with computers, and like to share them with others like us. Go to a dating forum if you need to make yourself feel better about yourself. None of my friends 'get' computers like I do, but they wouldn't put me down for it.
