Anybody else having issues with the latest iTunes update?

After installing 9.1.1 iTunes reconverts seven of my songs every single time I sync my iPhone (I have checked the on-the-fly sampling conversion). No error messages showing up in the console though.

I noticed it was happening with just five MP3 files with high bit rates. I re-encoded to AAC and the problem vanished.

It's kind of a bummer they released the update with such a bug though.

What was your "high bitrate" with the MP3s? I have most of my CDs ripped at 320kbps (that's a lot of music), and I'd like to not have to re-encode all of that... Plus these songs were only a problem when you synced them with your iPhone? How do you manage the music on your phone? I select individual songs/albums instead of playlists or some other, automatic method.

Those MP3s were actually 320 kbps. I'm nowhere close to an audio expert so maybe I was wrong in calling that a "high bitrate". To me 320 kbps sounded like a lot compared to the 128 kbps AAC encode that's now on the iPhone.

But I can't say that that alone was the problem. I have other 320 kbps MP3 files that converted and synced to the iPhone perfectly fine without any issues. There must be some other problem, but I wasn't able to narrow it down any further.

Plus these songs were only a problem when you synced them with your iPhone?
Yes. They play fine in iTunes. And before the update to 9.1.1 they also synced just fine to my iPhone (as 320 kbps MP3 that is). The update was really the only difference. Not too surprising considering the release notes: "Addresses issues with converting songs to 128 kbps AAC while syncing." Obviously some code for on-the-fly re-encoding was modified and a bug must have snuck in there.

How do you manage the music on your phone?
By playlist. Plus, only sync if checked.

Anyone know if they refixed the AirTunes bug they reintroduced in 9.1? Namely, that upon waking the computer, iTunes doesn’t wait for the AirPort card to connect to a wireless network before trying to ‘join’ the AirTunes speakers, meaning that it pops up with an error message and defaults back to the computer speakers every single time you bring the computer out of sleep mode.

This was really annoying up until iTunes 7.5 or something like that, then it was fixed—and now it’s back again. :/

So others were indeed experiencing the same issue.
Avoid sync and timestamp issues in iTunes 9.1.1 - Mac OS X Hints

Apparently Apple has released another iTunes update that fixes it. But they're not pushing that build to people who already downloaded the initial build. You have to actually delete iTunes and download it again. :

But I don't follow MacOSXHints.com's explanation. It must be more than just the timestamp that's being reset. My songs re-synced even if I never played them. So either their timestamp was reset for another reason or there's more to it than just the file's timestamp. I have the suspicion it's the latter. It seems like quite a coincidence that of all my music it only happened with MP3 files encoded at a certain higher bitrate.

I believe the timestamp was being modified at sync in 9.1.1 (11). I could be wrong though.

iTunes is reconverting over 360 songs on my iPhone at every sync. Lame.

Also, frequently when I check for app updates, it asks for my iTunes password. Sometimes after entering my password it takes me to my account settings page. Thought this bug was fixed. Lame.

Do you have iTunes 9.1.1 (11)?

If so delete it and get a new iTunes from Apple's webpage. It will be release (12) and your issues should be solved.

Still having the same issues with the iTunes Store. The iPhone sync seems to be fixed.
