Can anyone point me in the right direction on where I can learn more about the syntax and language used in terminal app? I don't need to be a high power user, but would like some basic rudimentary understanding...directories, structures, permissions, what's bootable & not...
I know it's based on UNIX but it seems there are many different kernels with different languages/syntax.
Thanks,

The book that I have found the most useful has been "The Visual Quick Start Guide for UNIX."
Actually I really like all the Visual Quick Start Guides and have bought a bunch of them for reference.

O'Reilly Press has been one of the most reputable publishers of Unix books (and books on programming) for many years. They've also started to sort of co-opt OSX into the fold, what with its Unix heritage and all.
I believe they have a book specifically geared for OSX users, called "Learning the Mac OS X Terminal" or something like that. Unfortunately their site appears to be down at the moment, so I can't look it up right now, but they have many OSX books that are worth looking into.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried looking up that title in Amazon and B&N but could not find it. Any suggestions where I could pick it up?

Actually, its called Learning Unix for Mac OS X by Dave Taylor and Brian Jepson. The link takes you to its page at Amazon.

Thanks. All of these are great suggestions. I just finished reading the article in TidBITS and have ordered the book "Learning Unix for Mac OS X".
Can't wait to get started...but I will be careful.
