Shipping last week? Hardly. Maybe they're only shipping a dozen or so a week. Very frustrating.

LoL, they didn't say "Now Shipping in Mass Quantities" now did they? Of course if they ship a single unit, they'll post NOW SHIPPING just to draw attention and build hype; it's called marketing. Seriously though, Stanford's EDU Store has tons of them, and they're slowly but surely trickling into homes...however, as with most Apple products, expect them in retail stores first.

I really need mine right now. Not want, need. I hope Apple hurries up and takes care of their EDU customers.

In my book it is called spin or lying - which often are one and the same in todays dishonest society. Just because you can say someting and argue a case does not mean it is true. The current corporate and government culture stinks.

lying and marketing are almost one in the same. But as an EDU costumer myself, I feel your pain. My shipping date isn't 'til mid october, so I'll be in the computer labs quite often until then

I have been to 4 Apple stores and none have them. After going to the 2 in New Jersey (Menlo Park, Short Hills, and Tices Corner), I thought for sure the store in Manhattan must have it. When I walked in and talked to one of the specialists in SOHO he said at least two weeks maybe more till they get 1! Only 1, not even like 3 or 4 but just 1. Needless to say I was a little taken back.

I just wondering if Apple is shooting themselves in the foot.

-They've been adversiting the daylights out of the things since mid-July. Nothing like seeing something on TV you can't walk into a store and see/touch, let alone buy. I wonder how many they actually got interested in one of these beasts (switches) decided to buy another Wintel product?

-Methinks they missed the big back-to-school rush.

-I also think they really did the community a diservice by posting that 'now shipping' bit a week ago. So far only a few university bookstores have gotten their initial allocations.

We'll see what the week has in store.

My brother is a PC guy. He was very surprised when I told him that they were not shipping yet. Apple's been advertising them on TV, in Newsweek, and in other magazines. Why would they do this when you can't even go look at one?

Seems like a mistake to me. I just hope they get them shipping in quantity, and soon. I was hoping to buy one without waiting when Panther ships.

Just think back to Jurassic Park. That movie was advertised, commercials, McDonald's toys, etc 5 months well before it was released in theaters. It's all hype. Apple has succeeded.

Agreed, it is very frustrating. After working my ass off this summer to get money to buy a G5 and then finding no one has them in stock and Apple is saying a 4-6 shipping wait on the online store is extremely irritating.

Jurassic Park cost you 5-8 bucks to see. Plus, there were no competitors. The G5 is 2000-3000 dollars, and there are much cheaper PCs out there. This isn't the best analogy.

No competitors for a movie? How about all the hype about the Mustang GT thats not out for a year or so? There are no commercials, maybe, but plenty of hype.

Its called planned shortage. When you have a shortage, you can charge more. This happens with every apple product, especially their premium items.

This is somewhat out of character for Apple. The words "Now Shipping" has meant that product is showing up in Apple Stores and people are reporting that they got shipment confirmation in email - in large numbers.

It is as noted above, an accurate marketing analogy. PC's price means nothing because the G5 is hyped. Eveyone wants a G5, everyone (even ignorant about mac pc users) have seen the G5 commercials and know about it. That's hype. That's what Jurassic Park had months before it's release.
