The only thing that might would be MS Word. No app vendor has considered Publisher a 'serious' enough desktop publshing format to incorporate it into their application on the mac side.

This doesn't read publisher docs, but it's a DTP app:

Just to frame the conversation a bit: Publisher is not a good choice for serious publishing. It is like FrontPage: It allows people who know nothing about an area (publishing or web development) to produce simple documents that look "good enough" for many people. Neither is suitable for professional work (not that people don't try... and even think they have succeeded).
If you ask a better question you might get better answers, questions such as:
I am looking for a program that will import Microsoft Publisher files...
or
I am looking at doing some page layout work. I have used Microsoft Publisher in the past, and am looking for tools that do the same sort of thing on the Macintosh.

You might also like to take a look at RagTime. There's even a free not-for-profit version.

Anyone have any other suggestions? I need an alternative to MS Publisher for a private elementary school. It needs to do cools and fun things for kids like greeting cards, brochures, business cards, etc.

I guess you've already considered Apple Pages , comes with templates like Publisher. It is not able to import Publisher files, I think you'll stuggle with Publisher compatibility. It is one of those formats that to my knowledge has stayed very propriety to MS, and has never really taken off from 3rd party suppliers. Keep looking though as I may be wrong

Honestly it's because Publisher sucks. Publisher can export in different formats though, so you can then open them in other programs. Pages is far superior to Publisher in my opinion.
Quark is just plain overpriced and impossilby difficult to learn compared to a program like Publisher. You would be better off trying Adobe CS if you were going to spend so much money. I'll give quark one point. It's more powerful by a huge margin than Publisher and as is it's learning curve.
Are you asking if any other application can open them because you have a bunch of Publisher files? What is the reasoning behind this? Is it just that you have not gotten them exported in a different format? Publisher can export as the following formats:
Try this page on Microsoft dot com
This is why Microsoft Sucks:
Can they make this process any more convoluted? It's a freaking export.
File > Export > Choose WORD...

The ability to open Publisher files is not necessary. They're just looking for an application with capabilities similar Publisher that is easy enough for elementary kids to use and has a lot of templates.

Earlier in the thread they said not being able to open Publisher files was a minus.
Otherwise, there are several general design apps for various purposes like Stone Create, The Print Shop, etc.

Ignore the argumentative nature of this poster. He is old and can't engage in meaningful dialog
very long. Therefore, management asks that you at least humor him. Thanks.

Or maybe you want to take a look at LaTeX?
However, I'm not sure this is what you want? If you want a hybrid of word processor and professional DTP, how about RagTime? (RagTime, by the way, was Mac developer #3, so they've been with Apple since the very beginning.)

Well, if it's for young students, I'm not sure LaTeX is a good choice.

I don't know who it is for. He made three posts, but as far as I remember didn't mention any students.

Oh, I forgot to mention Papyrus, an extremely fast and stable DTP/WP crossover application.
