My sister told me she heard it was a Rampage movie.

Could be cool actually.

Ridley Scott did Alien with only about 2 1/2 minutes of monster, and the rest was pretty scary. The flashing lights, the fast breathing sound effects and especially weird score helped too!

Nothing really intersting here. I was out checking out movie trailers and stuff, got the headphones plugged in so I can listen to the trailers at good volume without bugging the wife and kid, and I decide to check out the 1-18-08 site to see if there is anything new. Moved around and the pictures, flipped 'em over, same old stuff. So I go off to other web stuff and absent mindedly leave the 1-18-08 window open as I continue kicking around the web. A few minutes go by and then I hear this freaking Godzilla-esque moan/roar thing coming blaring thru my headphones. Scared the crap out of me! Thought something was in the damn house!
Just double checked it then did a little checking on the web. Leave the window open for 6 minutes and you get the roar. Freaking gave me heart failure.

Worked well for Shyamalan movies. Or the first Aliens.

Lovecraft scared the CRAP out of me when I used to read his stuff. I swear I left his book in my car because I didn't want it in the house with me.

From what I've heard more recently, this may have nothing to do with Lovecraft after all.

So no one knows anything about it. Not really, at least.

Sounds like a great movie.

I seem to recall Sony Pictures still has the US rights to Godzilla (rather, the rights to make another Godzilla movie as a sequel to the 1998 abomination) in an agreement with Toho. 1-18-08 is a Paramount production, so I'd say no Gojira.

Seems unlikely that it's Godzilla, why would he be in NY? I would love a good Cthulhu mythos movie.

From Wikipedia:
In addition, Kirk Montgomery of Colorado's 9NEWS reported an inside source's claim that the website Slusho.jp "has lots of clues", though this has not been officially confirmed as a marketing campaign website....

At Comic-Con 2007, Abrams was expected to announce the official title of the movie at the Paramount panel. Abrams however did not reveal an official title for the film and also denied that it would be called Monstrous. He added that the marketing campaign would continue, in which a full trailer, clips, posters and the title would be released, and that the movie was still in production but filming was almost completed. Attendees of the Paramount panel were given T-shirts featuring the "Slusho!" logo.

For some reason I am under the impression that this is going to be a new monster, but if not, Lovecraft would make sense. H.P.'s stuff is (arguably) public domain, so no licensing fees, royalties or what-not.

Dagon was actually decent for being a low budget HP Lovecraft flick.

It actually reminded me of a weird twisted dream.

It's not the BEST acting... or the BEST cinematography, but it had an eerie surreal quality to it that makes it one of my favs movies at the time.

I must admit that I've never read of Lovecraft's books, and an Amazon search returned no version of Call of Cthulu that I could find.

Well, it is called Cloverfield. There's a new trailer (filmed by someone at the screening--verrrry crappy) on YouTube, and it will be shown before Beowulf this weekend.

I finally got around to watching it a couple weeks ago. I'll definitely agree that it's not the best acting out there. I didn't think that the cinematography was all that bad, but definitely room for improvement. Definitely see the appeal though, was a pretty good movie.

Edit: I definitely used 'definitely' way too many times in that post.

They won't let you see the monster, if you do you'll go insane.

Below the thunders of the upper deep,
Far, far beneath in the abysmal sea,
His ancient, dreamless, uninvaded sleep
The Kraken sleepeth: faintest sunlights flee
About his shadowy sides; above him swell
Huge sponges of millennial growth and height;
And far away into the sickly light,
From many a wondrous and secret cell
Unnumber'd and enormous polypi
Winnow with giant arms the lumbering green.
There hath he lain for ages, and will lie
Battening upon huge sea-worms in his sleep,
Until the latter fire shall heat the deep;
Then once by man and angels to be seen,
In roaring he shall rise and on the surface die.

Fearless wretch,
Insanity,
He watches,
Lurking beneath the sea,
Great old one,
Forbidden site,
He searches,
Hunter of the shadows is rising,
Immortal,
In madness you dwell

Sweet, thanks. I couldn't tell WTF was goin' on in the first one. This looks interesting; I'll probably give it a watch. I like a good monster suspense with good special effects, even if you don't ever see the monster, I hear?

If it has anything at all to do with Lovecraft than it would make no sense to avoid showing the monster. Lovecraft found great pleasure in making sure you knew what it was that scared you. Except for rare instances in his earlier writings, he gave very detailed description of the horrors he envisioned. Besides, in reality, anything looking to kill you would not elect to lurk in the shadows when they have the perfect opportunity to kill or feed. And as for something as big as the Cloverfield monster; for the characters to voluntarily risk their lives filming the destruction of New York and somehow never think to aim the camera at the thing causing the destruction is absolutely dumb. Rule number one of compelling writing, never negate realistic actions and responses for the sole purpose of setting up a plot device or to force a story to lead to a desired event. Look at amateur video of any type of disaster or tragic event.

Besides, Even if a person is being shot at or attacked, they are still able to get a couple frames of the attacker or tragic event.

I have nothing against never showing the monster for psychological effect, but when you mix that with the gimmick of character-shot camcorder footage, you've got a very stupid and haphazard case of shortsightedness.
If I had a signature, it would be better than yours.

Now this is annoying. Mac went Intel ages ago but when I want to play Midway games online from Classic Games I find out that Shockwave Player for Mac OS X is still PPC and requires a browser to be launched in Rosetta mode

They've changed, if you use the newest rule set from WotC, but I can't stand it. My group still uses an AD&D first and second edition hybrid that we developed a long time ago. We still get some new campaign material from time to time, but we adapt it and change what we don't like. Oh well, I suppose we're just old farts and stuck in our ways. We often joke that we'll still be playing the same thing when we're in a nursing home, seems like a fun way to spend my twilight years.
