Embarrassed to admit it, but I actually let myself get excited by this one rumor. (and I should absolutely know better!)

Oh well .. I've resigned myself to the fact that it has enough value to me that I'll keep paying for it.

Well there must be something on the way, otherwise little reason for the "Full Member" status to appear on active accounts.

It stands to reason that they have an ad-supported scaled down version of the service, but it apparently wasn't ready in time for the iPhone 4 Developer Conference.

So much for the Apple TV, 10.7, and the ad campaign that would replace Hodgman/Long.

Good luck to Google in offering a cheap HTPC for my projector.
Good luck to Microsoft in offering even better platforms for real applications.

I was thinking that the "Individual member" vs "Full member" thing was just a syntax change. After all they just did overhaul the entire mail app to the new (and very nice) beta version. It would stand to reason that other things would change (such as verbiage).

(My current expiration is in January of 2012, so I've got some time regardless.) :-)

If there is, we won't hear about until after the iAd launch.

iCards were the best! I'm not even joking. After I moved here to Colorado, it was super easy to send cards to family and friends for holidays, etc.

But seriously Koralatov, you liked the Key Lime iBook? That color was eye piercing my friend! I saw it in store and couldn't stand to look at it for more than a couple of seconds at a time.

And btw, I love the Clamshell iBooks!

I've just set my DotMac/MobileMe to expire and not renew in August. I've had it for 8 years but realized I was paying for email and never using the rest of the stuff.

I was using iDisk with sync all the time when I had an iMac and a MacBook. But now that I have to use a Windows box at work, that becomes a lot less useful, since it’s really slow on that machine. And I finally got around to Dropbox, which does the offline sync on both platforms.

I still really like the push sync of contacts/calendars/bookmarks between my Mac, iPhone, and iPad (not the PC, since Outlook makes me sad), so between that and not having to change the e-mail I’ve had for years, it’s kinda worth the $70 Amazon price. But I keep thinking of all the cool stuff they could be doing…

I'll back you on whooping Stogie's ass. Key Lime clamshell ibooks (or any clamshell ibook) is a-ok in my err, book.

That dalmation imac though? Cmon. Don't tell me you're taking up the cause of the flower power imac as well.

If you really think about it. Dot Mac, (and now Me.com) has been a bastardized Apple product since day one. It's really nothing more than $99 email and bookmark synching.

And online storage via WebDAV,
and calendar syncing,
and address book syncing,
and the FindMyiPhone service,
and Logic plugin/channel-strip setting syncing,
and two-click iPhoto gallery sharing (including syncing back down photos uploaded to your gallery by others),
and two-click video sharing out of iMovie/from iPhone.

All with absolutely ZERO set-up beyond entering your username/password ONCE.

You don't need to think it's great value, and you can continue to troll all you want, but at least get your fax strait.

... and the feature I value the most is the contacts db. (which is light years beyond Google's offering!)

I also love the gallery. Although I wish I could set a password on a particular gallery on a Windows machine.

MM for all it's shortcomings makes my life sufficiently better that I pay for the family pack. Simple stuff, like scanning a business card into my iPhone, (BR Reader ftw) and never having to worry about synchronisation to my MBP and iPad. Stuff just happens.

MobileMe's saved my butt several times at school. It's also nearly failed me as well. I'd be a lot more happy with MobileMe if it didn't go down quite so often.

All I need from MM is email, address, and calender sync, which even Android provides for free. The video/photo/webDAV features have never interested me, I already have all that for free. Apple needs free sync yesterday.

Your limited needs and preparedness to deal with organizing alternatives for yourself may mean that MM is not such good value for you.

I use most of the functionality and have no problem paying for it.

What do you find confusing about the Logic sync function?

I just can't imagine why Apple thought to link Logic to MobileMe. What other bizarre linking will Apple dream up? Controlling Final Cut Studio thru the AppleTV? Clicking the Apple earbuds controller to resize images in Aperture?

a) that's the work of the Logic guys.

b) lots of studios have a mobile and a stationary Mac, or several studio machines.. Nice to have sound settings syncable across machines.

The contacts DB that Google provides is about the absolute worst that I've seen on all fronts. I use GMail, but I manage my contacts with MobileMe. (Although ANYTHING would be better). I periodically export into Google to make my addressing easier during e-mail composition.

I know others that use Plaxo. Use ANYTHING but that horrible contacts DB that Google provides.

There’s 2 ways this is possible with it being explicitly enabled by the MobileMe people.

For one, there’s an API that any Mac developer can use to allow their application to sync whatever specific data they want. The application’s name then shows up in the Sync tab of the MM prefs pane. I don’t know the details, but it looks like it ends up putting changelogs in the “Library/Application Support” folder of your iDisk. Based on Spheric Harlot’s comment, I imagine this is what’s happening with logic. This feature has always seemed like such a great idea to me: for any app in which syncing is an obvious feature, developers don’t have to deal with any of the infrastructure stuff. I can only assume that there are some serious limitations that keep it from being more popular.

The other way is through checking Application Preferences in the PrefPane’s Sync tab. This doesn’t require any extra effort on developers’ part—I think it just syncs the whole ~/Library/Preferences folder. But it’s pretty impractical for users, since it’s all-or-none. If you have any apps that need separate settings on different Macs, then you can’t sync prefs for any other.

I like the new web interface very much. And the server-side rules are also very nice.

Now I'm wondering when they're going to update Apple Mail with the "letterbox" interface they're using in the web client?

The people in the "iPhone revange" thread would like to know the precision of the phonolocation service, and whether you can sign up for the service after the iPhone has been stolen.

I don't have MM, but I hear about the service being down all the time. Can someone that actually uses MM comment about what exactly goes down? Is just the web interface down, or do you lose all email access from any device and all idisk and syncing ability?

I can't recall very many outages with MobileMe. (I think the web-interface was out once, but that's all I can remember.) I've been using it since the iTools days.

With the iPhone (as opposed to the iPod Touch) it's as precise as the GPS allows it to be. (In my case, quite precise)

You can always sign up, but it won't benefit you once you've lost possession of your phone. The reason is that you need to turn on "Find my iPhone" on the device itself. You can't do that if you don't have the device. (It's also recommended that you add a passcode to your device, so that someone who finds it can't turn it off.)

Normally when I have an outage, it's on the website, but desktop clients (Apple Mail, etc.) is fine.

MobileMe needs a lot more to be continually viable. For instance:

• More storage space given alternatives out there like DropBox which are mostly free.

• Offer some online office tools like Google Docs as part of the price equation. Clearly Apple has similar properties in iWork they could port for cloud use.

• They could also consider some value added things like Apple store discounts, special offers, and/or priority reservation stuff with things like reserving an iPhone (or insert latest must have here.)

• They could use a dedicated iPad app (versus the upscaled iPhone version)
• They should re-enable using the space for a personal web site or blog using things other than iWeb.
• Agreed they could bring back things like iCards
• What about online version of iChat by logging in?
• What about something like "GoToMyMac" built in?

...and you can continue to troll all you want, but at least get your fax strait.
I think I have my facts straight. I was including many of what you bulleted into the "synching" aspects of my summary of the service. And full disclosure, I am a .Mac / me.com customer. I am just suggesting the service has never really lived up to what it could be.

Really the only feature I can point to as a big ticket item is: "Connect to Other User's iDisk" -- this is a very convenient way to move large files from one designer to another. Given most creatives use a Mac, it's very convenient. But even this is losing its traction with other compelling alternatives.

Having it built directly in to the OS is nice, for sure.

I agree with everything that Eyenigma said. (Even if I plan to continue to pay for and use MobileMe.) As I've said previously, my main value-added feature is the very well done Contacts app and the sync. (Far better than the barely usable GMail contacts). But I'd love the other things that Eyenigma said, and I'd be far more apt to recommend MobileMe to a broader group of people.
