I wanted to ask what apps you people use to create your gifs?

The only art apps I have are:

((Adobe PhotoShop 5.0 LE)) OS9/Classic
((Adobe PhotoDeluxe)) OS9/Classic
((Appleworks 6.2)) OS X

I would like to create some sig pitures with transparencies too...

maybe I have missed the option to create gifs in one of those apps... have I...?

Can you reccomend any reasonably cheap/free apps that are good/easy for making them?

GraphicConverter. $30 shareware, and it can do transparent GIFs.

uhh... thanks guys but I dont think you understand how much of a novice I am...

GraphicConverter confused the heck out of me...

GIFfun didnt work...

GifBuilder, again confused me...

I was talking about something simaler to PhotoShop or PaintShopPro...

I just wanted to make some images with some transparency... not animations...

Ididnt want to convert anything, I wanted to just be able to turn some of my sigpics into gifs... I did however learn how to do this just a few minutes ago in photoshop... but the colors are all screwed up and looks really bad...

Back when I had VPC I just used a little program called animation studio or something like that had come with PSP7 to make gifs and it was real easy... isnt there a mac equivalent to that app? I dont remember but I think you could also produce static gifs with PSP7 too... I cant remember...

thanks for the responses...

Want something similar to Adobe Photoshop?

Get Adobe Imageready which is bundled with photoshop 6.0 and above for free. That's what I used to create animation in some of my signature.

Want Transparency? Create any image without background and save as .png. You better hope that you can get it under 10k.

Ferro- I'm probably reading your post wrong, and the earliest version of Photoshop I have laying around is 5.5, so the option I'm referring to might not be in the "Save for Web" box. If you create an image with no background and save it as a .gif with transparency turned on, then the blank area will be punched out and you can see through it.

For nice looking shadows and gradients, .PNG is the way to go.

If GraphicConverter confuses you, then maybe you should take a class or something. As far as painting goes, that's about as simple as it gets, except maybe for AppleWorks's built in features, or KidPix Although I think the author had been saying something about making a manual...

I do all my stuff (which isn't that much, admittedly) in Photoshop 7 and GraphicConverter. I, along with most of the Mac community, highly recommend GraphicConverter as the most graphics bang for your buck.

Cellery's right, by the way, about png. It's also the morally right decision--check out http://burnallgifs.org/

That reminds me: I've been meaning to switch my signature to png format.
