I was just thinking... Is it possible to surf from a computer in alaska from a computer in florida?
What I mean is... Is it possible to have my computer call up my friends computer on a phone line and use his computer which has broadband internet to surf the net and send me the data?
Or is that cheating <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> ?
Is it possible?

Cheating in what way?
Doing it without your "friend's" knowledge?
Yes it's possible. Similar things happen each day when you dial your ISP. You simply have to set up his machine to be a host for your session.

As long as you're using a dial-up connection to your friend's computer, the broadband connection on his end isn't likely to do you any good. His computer may get the information faster, but you'll still be receiving it at whatever speed you connect to his computer with.

Your Mac on dial up----->your ISP on a T1/T3 or bigger line----->the Internet.
The problem is that you will still be on dial up. Get DSL, it is worth it

I just thought... does this ride a "fine line" when it comes to stealing? I mean I wouldnt have to pay a dime for internet access (other than the phone bill from his house to mine, which is a local call anyway) to get online... My friend wouldnt mind at all... but can he legaly just share his access like that?

Do I need to buy software to do this?
(Note: I am not implying that I would get to have broadband speeds by doing this)

Your friend would need to check the service agreement w. his ISP. Many broadband providers have a "one computer" rule (Note: This is a frequently broken rule) to try to prevent the type of thing that you're describing.
