I came home from work the other day, woke up my iBook 14.1" 600/384 in OSX and tried to access the internet (56k dialup). I first used the menu bar connect option....nothing happened. I go to the connect word in the menu and let go, but nothing.
So next I tried to open the Internet connect app. It opens fine, so I try and press the blue aqua connect button at the bottom right...You guessed it...nothing.

I have tried restarting and it still nothing. I even tried to use the disk first aid software that comes with OSX and that doesn't work either...I mean it doesn't work at all. When I open the software all the buttons are grayed out even after selecting the drive (top left).

So I thought maybe I could connect to the internet through Classic mode.....surprise surprise....Classic has stopped working aswell.

I love OSX but at the moment I am having to use OS 9...Can anyone help

PLEASE HELP...I'm going through OSX cold turkey.

This should go in the threads where people are holding their chins up high saying OSX is the best thing since chocolate cake and never gives problems.

You have to use the Disk First Aid utility from the install CD, not the hard drive. Start from the CD, then run the disk utility.

Make sure all of your internet preferences are still set, both in the network pane of System preferences and in Internet Connect. Make sure the internal modem is activated in the Network Port Configurations option. When I was still using 10.1 on a dialup connection every once in awhile the preferences would change (Darwin's fault, undoubtedly).

It seems he has his phone line connected as it is working in OS9.
Is it the same oS9 install as the classic in OSX or a separate one? You mention nothing happens, as in it doesn't dial or fails to negotiate a connection but does dial out?

This is a message board for people looking for help. Of course there are going to be people with problems, that's the purpose of this board.

I am of course aware of the fact that the sites dedicated to helping people with Windows problems are filled with nothing but people who never have trouble with Windows. Take my Compaq Armada 1700 (please). Since I loaded XP on it, everthing is roses. Half my software programs don't work. I need to upgrade everything Symantec makes. The laptop no longer hibernates or sleeps. Compaq points the finger at M$, whilst M$ points the finger at Compaq. My oh my yes, Windows is perfect.

UPDATE:
I've just downloaded 10.1.5 update, it crashes as soon as I select the drive and press the update button.

The internet works fine when I restart in OS9

I have also TRIED to run Disk first aid from the CD...I have tried the software update CD's (that came with my iBook) and the OSX Applications CD...but they just try and install new System software, not letting me even start the Disk first aid app...Any Ideas?

Please help me I have started to sweat and shake

You should have a MacOS X Installer cd (not software restore) to boot from, which will bring you to the Installer. In there, open the Disk Utility from the 'Installer' menu (I think it's the Installer menu, could be Apple menu too), and you should be able to verify your disk, and repair it if necessary. Make sure you select the volume you want to repair, not the disk; repair only works on one volume at a time.

Have you tried booting up using Command+S, running fsck -y repeatedly until you get no errors? I haven't seen anyone suggest it, and it won't hurt.

On an unrelated note:

Someone posts an appropriate plea for help on a mac board.

Another person enters the discussion with a comment that has no bearing at all on the problem the person is trying to solve.

The thread is completely derailed, the person does not get the help they need.

kellyhogan is a malicious entity. It has the same mentality as someone who writes computer viruses. Completely and maliciously destructive. I have gone into a few other forums at MacNN, and it shows up in all of them. The exact same pattern of behavior. And we let things like kellyhogan get away with it. When in forums like this, the only way to deal with ignorant destructive trash is to ignore it completely. Completely. If it is in the MacNN lounge forum, that is different, that is what that forum is for. But in forums like this, imagine if no one answers or talks back to the posts?

What is the sound of one hand clapping?

"An argument isn't just saying 'No it isn't'!" "Yes it is!" "NO IT ISN'T!"

Guys just ignore Kelly - he has a lot to deal with.

Kelly, I know life is probably tough for you, being out of a job, and being recently divorced, but you should try and get some fresh air, perhaps even a holiday to the continent.

Kelly, you should seek professional counselling for anger management. Spending so much time in front of your machines with no face to face societal interactions is being detrimental to your psyche. Everyone on the forum has noticed your deteriorating condition. You should act before it is too late, lest you contemplate suicide and take your life in a fit of depression -that would be tragic.

Getting back to problem. Here are a few TIL's that may help you:

This problem does sound strange. Since even the 10.1.5 updater is crashing I do in fact wonder if there isn't some disk corruption going on there.

I suggest:
(This has been mentioned above but let's do it again)
Reboot with the command-s keys pressed. This will take you into single user mode and you should see a screen with a command line prompt.
Type (without the quotes) "/sbin/fsck -y" and press enter.
Do this a few times if after the first time it mentions that there were problems.
Reboot normally.
Try the 10.1.5 installer again. If it still crashes, try to run the 10.1.4 updater/installer again. If this also crashes open up the console utility and post back here what it has recently said.

Don't you think that people would ignore KellyHogan if they could? That's the mark of a good troll, their comments are so ignorant and insulting that you almost HAVE to respond, and with hundreds of people reading them someone ALWAYS will.

I had the same problem on several mailing lists of a completely unrelated subject matter. For YEARS people tried to ignore the comments of a guy that was sooooooooo similar to KellyHogan. In fact if he wasn't so witty I'd swear it WAS KellyHogan. When I stared my own similar list he turned up there too and kept starting flamewar after flamewar all the while acting totally innocent and obvlious to the fact that he was the one starting them and that everyone HATED him being there.

I had the shock of my life when I put him on 'moderated' status so that his postings wouldn't go thru unless I approved them. He still posts his inane inflamatory comments on a regular basis, but is totally oblivious to the fact that no one is seeing them or responding to them at all! I always thought that he was a malicious sociopath that loved getting people fighting, just like people think KellyHogan is, but I found out that he is just totally detached from what he is saying, and how people percieve him. He hasn't noticed that he has been blocked for 6 months and 25 posts! As far as the list knows he has dropped off the face of the earth, and he hasn't even noticed that he's gone!

Anyway, there is only one person per forum that can do anything about the KellyHogan virus, and that is the Moderator. If they choose to deal with the problem by closing perfectly good thread after perfectly good thread just because they are ruined by KellyHogan, I think that is a mistake that will not solve anything. If they choose to deal with it by banning or moderating KellyHogan, I think they will get a nomination for Sainthood from everyone else on the Forum.

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

If you are going to format your HD, you might consider to zeroing your drive while you're at it. This is due to that I heard that it will update the openfirmware. (Apple dude said so) Minor corruptions in openfirmware could lead to all kind of wierd behaivors. I expect that's why I had to send in my ibook ones. Just my 2 cents.
