My boss killed this snake in his garden last night and has given me the task of identifying what type of snake it is.
I'm a city-guy... I dunno' snakes. Does anyone here know snakes?
We live in central Mississippi, if that helps narrow things down.

Is it a rat snake?
Wussy non-venomous American snakes...

Could be Lampropeltis triangulum. The "Milk snake". Hard to tell. If I'm correct, it's non-venomous. The patterning looks wrong, though... I don't know many snakes from that area.
Could be the Northern Water snake, or Nerodia sipedon. Again, non-venomous. This one is a safe bet, cause it varies a shitload in colouration and pattern.
My last guess would be the Northern Copperhead, Agkistrodon contortrix mokasen. It's a viper. Venomous. Stay away. This is a pretty close match, now that I think about it.
Got another photo?

Yeah, here's another photo. Unfotunately, it's not too great. My boss is an older gentleman and not so steady with the camera.

I just went through a snake identification page and it came up with a Northern Copperhead... this is the pic they showed... the marking looks similar to me! You decide...
Although whatever it is, it scares the bejesus out of me. It is pics like this make me realise how glad I am to live in a country where you can live your whole life and not see a snake, and also where things aren't generally venonous or poisonous..
(Every other aspect of the country is shite though)
Peace,
Marc

Yeah, it's a very nice looking specimen... Northern Copperhead. Venomous. Don't know how dangerous they are to humans, but I believe it's reasonably closely related to the Cottonmout - so stay away.
I love snakes.

What kind of boss kills a snake and makes an employee ID it? Will he make you clean it/cook it/throw it out as well? Slow work day?

What's the whole story? How did your boss come to kill the snake in his garden?

I don't really know the whole story. I think his wife saw the snake in their yard and was frightened by it. So, she ran and got him, and he killed it. That's about all I know. Sorry I don't have a more exciting tale.

Umm, nevermind.
I was simply implying that the NY media is the worst and most vicious in all the world if you ask me...

Yes, that is a Copperhead. There are quite a few of them that show up in my backyard that I have to kill with a shovel. The little bastards.

I read that less than 1% of Copperhead bites are deadly to adult humans. While venemous, the snake is not deadly to us 99 out of 100 times.
On another topic...
So, you're saying that your boss took pre-emptive action on this snake? As we all know, he should have waited till the snake bit him, THEN retaliated.

Hey buddy, are you trying to get this thread moved to the political forum?
Man, snakes are so rad.

No he should have rung Humane Snake Removal on 1-800-339-9470 and they would have defused the situation without resorting to violence.
